Here is how the Automation Specialist I/II/III role will impact our business:
The objective of the Automation Specialist is to perform and lead complex automation tasks with a positive, team-first attitude, including configuration changes to RTUs, PLCs, and related equipment, as well as advanced troubleshooting of automation devices. This role supports project commissioning and programming efforts--initially with guidance and eventually independently--across maintenance and development projects. Responsibilities also include contributing to the research and development of new equipment, supporting the I&E team, and assisting in planning and execution of small projects. As experience grows, the Specialist mentors junior technicians, takes on leadership roles in R&D initiatives, and may assist or stand in for the Automation Supervisor in guiding the team and coordinating automation projects.
The Automation Specialist responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead and execute automation, facility, and maintenance projects in the field.
- Program, configure, and optimize PLCs, RTUs, and related control systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair automation, instrumentation, and communication network issues.
- Commission new devices, systems, and facilities to ensure proper functionality and compliance.
- Collaborate daily with Operations and Facilities Construction teams to support safe and efficient operations.
- Provide second-level technical support and guidance to I&E Technicians.
- Perform preventative maintenance and verify automation system reliability and performance.
- Document all programming, configuration, and maintenance activities accurately.
- Record and manage all work, service reports, and project details in Maximo and Salesforce.
- Maintain strict adherence to EQT’s safety, environmental, and operational standards.
- Communicate daily progress, issues, and recommendations with supervisors and project leads.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and uphold EQT’s commitment to operational excellence and community partnership.
- Performs facility commissioning and loop checks with minimal supervision and within the project timeline.
Required Experience and Skills:
- 1+ years of experience in a related field or industry.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Hands-on experience with programming and configuring PLCs and RTUs from various manufacturers.
- Solid understanding of industry standards and best practices, including:
- IEC 61131-3 (PLC programming languages and structure)
- ISA standards for instrumentation, control systems, and automation safety.
- Modbus, DNP3, and Ethernet/IP communication protocols.
- Ability to troubleshoot, test, and commission automation and instrumentation systems.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for effective interaction with Operations, Facilities, and I&E teams.
- Proven commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
- Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently on multiple field assignments.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Automation Engineering preferred.
- Experience with specific PLC and RTU platforms, including, Emerson FB3000, Allen-Bradley, Emerson ROC, ControlLogix, and Schnider Modicon Systems.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems and remote monitoring applications.
- Knowledge of network infrastructure, including switches, routers, and wireless communications.
- Experience with facility commissioning and startup of automation and control systems.
- Understanding of EQT operational standards, maintenance practices, and safety protocols.
- Certifications from recognized industry organizations, such as:
- Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) – ISA
- Certified Automation Professional (CAP) – ISA
- API certifications (e.g., API 1165,API RP 505, API RP 550,API 2534 or other relevant , Instrumentation/ Automation and Control Standards)
- Additional certifications or advanced training in industrial automation, process control, or electrical systems are beneficial.
