Job Description:

The Associate Vice President, Product & Underwriting, Small Business Insurance leads the Product and Underwriting functions for Commercial Property, Casualty and Automobile. The role is accountable for shaping product and underwriting strategies that support profitable growth, strong risk selection and a differentiated customer experience. Working across the organization, the AVP will align product, underwriting, pricing, reinsurance and business priorities to advance SBI’s strategic objectives within its risk appetite.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Define and execute the Product and Underwriting strategy and roadmap for Commercial Automobile and Commercial Property & Liability. 
  • Lead the development of new products and regularly assess the existing portfolio to support growth, profitability and customer needs. 
  • Monitor market, industry and competitor trends and translate insights into strategic product and underwriting decisions. 
  • Own commercial policy contract wordings and provide coverage interpretation to business partners and stakeholders. 
  • Establish and maintain underwriting strategies, rules and manuals aligned with risk appetite, pricing strategies and business objectives. 
  • Monitor portfolio performance and adjust underwriting approaches based on profitability, risk and market conditions. 
  • Oversee complex referrals, renewals, escalations, large total insured value accounts and emerging business segments. 
  • Ensure timely, high-quality underwriting decisions and delivery against referral, renewal and service-level commitments. 
  • Maintain strong relationships with regulators and ensure required underwriting rules, endorsements, forms and manuals are filed appropriately. 
  • Partner with Pricing, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Risk, Legal, Distribution and other key functions to align priorities and deliver business outcomes. 
  • Monitor and report on Product and Underwriting performance, identifying opportunities to improve growth, profitability, controls and customer outcomes. 
  • Build a high-performing, inclusive team with strong technical capability, accountability and succession depth. 

Role Requirements 

  • Senior leadership experience in General Insurance, with deep knowledge of Small Business Insurance, Product and Underwriting. 
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing product and underwriting strategies that support profitable growth. 
  • Strong understanding of actuarial principles, pricing, portfolio management, risk governance and regulatory requirements. 
  • Experience leading complex portfolios and making sound decisions within established risk appetite and control frameworks. 
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and operate effectively in a highly matrixed environment. 
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including experience supporting profit-and-loss and growth objectives. 
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and executive presence, with the ability to simplify complex issues and align diverse stakeholders. 
  • Collaborative and inclusive people leadership, with a track record of building capability and developing talent. 
  • Ability to bring a clear strategic point of view while remaining open to new information, analysis and different perspectives.
