SUMMARY:

Writes or updates code to deliver on stated objectives, standards and performance. Provides technical direction to define the solution or product, ensures code standards and approaches are maintained, performs peer reviews and responds to questions, bugs or problems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serves as a team member to understand product deliverables and outcomes; contributes to technical direction to define the technology and solution.
  • Writes, updates or modifies code to deliver stated objectives, performance and outcomes.
  • Participates in peer review or analysis to reduce or eliminate causes of failures, bugs or unexpected results.
  • Provides research and feedback to resolve management and client questions and requirements.
  • Analyzes and reviews software and products on an ongoing and as needed basis to determine trends, draw conclusions, interpret findings, and presents results, proposals and recommendations to management.
  • Ensures the accuracy of software, reports, and related details through audits, queries, and operational reviews; works with teams to resolve discrepancies.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department's service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related
  • Exposure to software development experience
  • 1+ years of software development experience

Nice to Have:

  • Enrolled in Master's program for information technology, software development, or similiar.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Required Knowledge:

  • An understanding of principles, practices and techniques of software development.
  • Approaches to perform peer review or analysis.
  • Experience with Java and SQL statements
  • Willing to learn Angular, Vue, React, and PHP
  • Preferred experience working on web application in a cloud based architecture (AWS preferred)
  • Exposure to Agile lifecycle, preferably in a SCRUM process
  • Technology project management principles and approaches.
  • Various methods to identify and resolve software failures, bugs or unexpected results.
  • Exposure to methods and approaches to analyze and improve software performance.
  • Principles and practices to serving as an effective project team member.
  • Able to effectively communicate with staff, coworkers, and customers.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Required Skills:

  • Performing software development in a variety of areas.
  • Developing software approaches to meet requirements and performance, following established coding standards, patterns, and methodoligies.
  • Participating in code reviews and with constructive feedback.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving software failures, bugs or unexpected results.
  • Following software plans, approaches and techniques.
  • Operating in both a team and individual contributor environment.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established department guidelines.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Career Path Levels

Software Engineer

  • Integrates complex/sensitive development
  • Supports or requires more assistance on more complex/sensitive applications
  • Results in more limited rework and peer reviews
  • 5+ years of experience

Senior Software Engineer

  • Leads or translates large and highly technical development and applications
  • Results in limited to no rework and data fallout
  • 8+ years of experience

Travel as needed to support company and customer initiatives. Work on Site at our St Paul office may be required and ABOUT reserves the right to change the location of the role at any time.

This role may involve work on federal government contracts that require additional federal background investigations, training, and federal badging. As such, you may be required to submit personal information to the government and be fingerprinted and photographed at your local Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
