*** Please note that this is a HYBRID role, requiring this person to work at our Cottonwood Heights office in SLC three days a week. We are not able to provide work sponsorship (i.e. OPT or H-1B visa) for this role ***

Site Reliability Engineers keep the platforms behind Extra Space Storage's applications available, fast, and secure. SRE owns the AWS environments those applications run in, the pipelines that deploy them, the telemetry that proves they are healthy, and the response when they are not.

This is the entry level of the SRE track. You will own scoped infrastructure and automation work inside established standards, pipelines, and runbooks, and grow into owning initiatives start to finish. You will spend more time automating operational work than performing it.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate and improve AWS infrastructure across a multi-account environment, covering compute, containers, networking, databases, and identity, using infrastructure as code rather than console changes

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions, including reusable workflows, composite actions, and OIDC-based deployment roles, and help migrate remaining legacy pipelines onto that platform

  • Instrument service level indicators and objectives in Datadog, and improve dashboards, alerting, log pipelines, and APM coverage so problems surface before customers report them

  • Take a full share of the team's on-call rotation, drive incidents to restoration, and contribute to blameless postmortems and the follow-up work they generate

  • Remediate security findings from sources such as Tenable, CrowdStrike, and AWS Security Hub, and own a piece of monthly patching and vulnerability work through production deployment

  • Automate recurring operational work such as access provisioning, credential rotation, patch cycles, and environment standup and teardown, with the goal of removing the task rather than speeding it up

  • Support product teams as an infrastructure partner on environment builds, deployment troubleshooting, and cost and performance questions

  • Write and maintain runbooks, architecture notes, and self-service documentation so other engineering teams can move without waiting on SRE

  • Use AI-assisted development and triage tooling as part of normal engineering practice, and help evaluate where it can safely reduce operational toil

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on experience. Non-traditional paths including bootcamps, military technical training, internal transfers, and self-taught candidates with a demonstrable portfolio are considered.

  • 2+ years of software engineering, IT operations, or infrastructure experience preferred. Internship, service desk, or systems administration experience with demonstrated automation work counts toward this.

Competencies

  • Proficient in at least one language used by the team: PowerShell, Python, TypeScript, or C#/.NET

  • Working knowledge of a public cloud, preferably AWS, including core compute, storage, networking, and identity services and how they fit together

  • Infrastructure as code experience or strong demonstrated interest (AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform), plus comfort with Git-based workflows, pull requests, and code review

  • Familiarity with containers and serverless patterns (ECS/Fargate, ECR, Lambda) and with relational databases on a managed service such as RDS

  • Exposure to observability tooling (Datadog, CloudWatch, or equivalent) and an instinct for what makes a system measurable

  • Understanding of network and security principles, including least-privilege IAM, secrets handling, and frameworks such as CIS and OWASP

  • Clear written communication. Documentation, ticket updates, and incident notes are a substantial part of the job

  • Willingness to carry a full share of the 24/7 on-call rotation described below, and to work occasional scheduled maintenance windows outside business hours

On-Call

Every engineer on the team, at every level, carries an equal share of the on-call rotation. The cycle runs in three stages:

  • One week as 24/7 primary, taking first response for all pages

  • One week as 24/7 secondary, backing up the primary and picking up escalations

  • Off rotation until the cycle comes back around to you

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Performs sedentary work in an office environment with limited lifting (less than 10 pounds) or walking required. Close visual acuity required to perform work at computer terminal. No exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires repetitive typing motion, talking, hearing, grasping and feeling.
