JOB DESCRIPTION

 

DEPARTMENT:                     Innovation/New Product Development

REPORTS TO:                       New Products Ideation Design Manager

DIRECT REPORTS:             None

LOCATION:                            Charlotte, NC

TRAVEL:                                Up to 10% travel required


 

ROLE:

We are seeking a skilled Associate Product Design Engineer to join our Innovation Product

Development team. You will be responsible for designing and developing innovative

products while considering safety, cost, budget, and quality. This role involves working

with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet customer needs with minimal

defects. This highly collaborative role requires strong organizational, project management, and

communication skills, along with the ability to build relationships with corporate departments,

manufacturing teams, vendors, and customers to achieve objectives.

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Product design from concept to commercialization, including drawings, renderings, 3D prints, and prototypes.
  • Modify product designs to address customer pain points.
  • Identify key deliverables and ensure products meet Fitness for Use (FFU) requirements.
  • Execute FFU testing procedures and provide data-driven insights.
  • Assist in creating quality specifications and test methods for new products.
  • Work cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, and marketing to ensure smooth product development.
  • Other duties, as necessary.

 

Design/Product Design:

  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude skills.
  • Exhibit 3D CAD and rendering aptitude.
  • Understand Genpak’s manufacturing processes.
  • Convert concepts into manufacturable designs.
  • Design with safety in mind.
  • Apply strong analytical skills to product design.
  • Apply engineering principles to relevant plastic parts and packaging designs.
  • Possess knowledge of plastic thermoforming material properties.
  • Identify design improvements.

 

 

 

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

Interpersonal/Communication:

  • Foster interdepartmental communication and teamwork.
  • Manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Communicate clearly in written and verbal forms, ensuring timely dissemination of information.
  • Stay composed under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers.

 

Technical Knowledge:

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, including blueprints, schematics, and mechanical diagrams.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical principles.
  • Stay updated on new equipment and technical methods.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Visualize, Blender, Adobe Illustrator, or similar design software.
  • Utilize measuring and gauging equipment correctly.

 

Efficiency:

  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to drive improvement.
  • Continuously meet or exceed performance standards.

 

Safety:

  • Comply with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Uphold, support and exemplify safety programs and standards.
  • Follow plant safety requirements during site visits.
  • Participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) as needed.
  • Promote safe working practices.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in the work area.
  • Adhere to Federal and State industrial safety regulations and industry-specific regulations and safety standards.
  • Engage in all company safety initiatives and protocols.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Engineering with 0 years of related Industrial/Consumer Products/Thermoforming Design experience,
    OR
  • AS in Engineering or Operations Technology with 2 years of related experience,
    OR
  • 0-3 years of related Industrial/Consumer Products/Thermoforming Design experience.
  • Knowledge of polymers and plastics processing machinery.
  • Experience in Design for Thermoforming applications.
  • Project management experience is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Advanced 3D CAD skills with graphic rendering experience preferred.
