Job Description

Role Summary

We are currently hiring an Associate in Toronto to join the Growth Equity team. In this role, you will be actively involved in fund and company diligence and execution, building relationships with leading funds and companies, and monitoring existing and future investments. You will have significant exposure to disruptive companies and top-tier investors across the venture and growth-stage ecosystem. The position will be based at CPPIB headquarters in Toronto, alongside the rest of the team, with in-office presence required and travel expected.

As the ideal candidate, you are recognized for your team-oriented and self-starter approach, with critical and innovative thinking. You have started to build a track record in investing and asset management, with venture/growth stage experience and / or technology exposure as a plus. You have started to lead workstreams independently in a project and take ownership of outcomes. You are an effective communicator who can participate in investment committees and management discussions; build a relationship of trust with key partners and stakeholders; and support/manage the execution of investment and asset management initiatives. 

 Team Summary

Growth Equity’s (“GE”) mission is to provide CPPIB with strong returns by making fund commitments and GP-aligned direct co-investments alongside venture capital and growth equity managers across North America and Europe. GE is part of the Funds group within CPPIB’s C$156B Private Equity platform and works closely with several teams across the broader organization

Accountabilities:

This role will span both fund commitments and company co-investments. In addition to the below responsibilities, a GE Associate should collaborate with other teams/departments across CPPIB, participate in other initiatives to help execute strategy goals for the GE group and the broader fund, and work in our office at least 4 days a week to contribute to team culture (excluding travel days).

Underwrite commitments to venture growth and growth equity fund managers.

  • Review fund materials, assess past performance and competitive positioning (market mapping), conduct reference calls with existing LPs, draft investment memos, and manage diligence streams (e.g. external legal counsel, internal operations).
  • Help manage existing fund relationships alongside senior relationship managers to monitor fund performance and surface direct investment opportunities.

Underwrite co-investments into top growth companies alongside our fund managers.

  • Review co-investment diligence materials from our fund partners, meet with management teams and fund partners to discuss the business and our alignment with the fund partner, sensitize the returns forecast, drafting investment memos, and manage diligence streams (e.g. external legal counsel, internal operations).
  • Monitor existing direct investments and support asset management initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Preference for individuals with 3 - 5 years of investment banking, consulting and/or early/growth stage investment experience. Prior fund investing experience is a plus.
  • A genuine passion for disruptive technology investing, building relationships with fund partners, and solving complex business problems 
  • Excellent research and analytical skills 
  • Superior interpersonal and relationship buildings skills; strong ability to work effectively in a team environment with a commitment to fostering an inclusive culture 
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and juggle multiple workstreams when necessary
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Experience conducting due diligence work with tight timelines when necessary
  • Conduct consistent with our Guiding Principles of Integrity, Partnership and High Performance
