Lilly is currently constructing a Next Generation Biotech Drug Substance Manufacturing Facility in Limerick, Ireland. This facility will be Lilly’s most technically advanced manufacturing site and will include next-generation manufacturing technologies and advanced data collection and analysis platforms that will deliver improvements in safety and quality, and increased productivity and process performance.

Main Purpose and Objectives of Position: 

The Associate Director Process Automation has overall responsibilities for the performance of the Automation Team ensuring effective, efficient and compliant provision of automation to the site. This will involve the provision of day to day automation support to the operating areas across the site, providing automation support for capital projects (local and corporate), formulating and driving the sites automation strategy and interfacing with the corporate automation function. The leader also ensures that the team’s activities are appropriately resourced and integrated with the site’s longer-term objectives. The AD Proces Automation is a member of site Engineering management team with shared responsibility for the function and site meeting its targets. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Daily Operations Management 

  • Ensure the provision of automation resources for day to day support of the sites operating areas.  

  • Manage the link between the team and key customers, internal and/or external.

  • Responsible for process automation strategy and planning activities at the site. This includes developing the capital, expense and staffing plan for process control. 

  • Responsible for the relationship with control system vendors and gets involved in the negotiations around new equipment, professional services, etc. 

  • Responsible for the technical and personal development of the process automation team. Also responsible for day-to-day supervision of these persons which includes the administration of company policy. 

  • Ensure resources are available and assigned to be able to implement and maintain systems in a compliant state. 

  • Accountable for the design and implementation for all quality/automation/validation processes in the automation process control team. 

  • Participates and influences Corporate Automation groups; acts as part of the global process control leadership group. 

Personnel Management 

  • Plan, agree, monitor and measure the team goals/business plan. Ensure the team goals are translated to individual team member performance. 

  • Ensure ongoing continuous improvement and future planning. 

  • Establish and Maintain safety, GMP and environmental Standards. 

  • Identify and implement changes to work practices in conjunction with appropriate team members. 

  • Ensure the company values, standards and policies are communicated to and modelled within the team. 

  • Conduct annual performance reviews with team members. 

  Site Management 

  • Manage site events in conjunction with other site management members (to meet overall targets set out in the business plan). 

  • Contribute to the site planning processes (such as HR / business / scorecard / capital / action planning). 

  • Proactively support site management decisions and strategy. 

 Strategy Development and Implementation 

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of site strategy. 

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of capacity and technology strategy as well as business development 

  • Build the organization with the necessary capability, capacity and culture to operate this facility to the highest standards of excellence 

  • Develop and implement the systems and processed needed to run the site, leveraging existing Lilly knowledge and practices where necessary, but also incorporating external experiences and learning.  

  • Ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence by supporting lean principles and a Digitally Native approach  

  • Support the project team as they deliver the facility to the site team, by providing feedback and support on decisions & strategies etc. Collaborate with them to ensure the right decisions are made to meet project deliverables and longer term strategic goals for the site.  

Educational Requirements: 

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics and Instrumentation, Electrical or Electronic Engineering or qualifications in other relevant engineering discipline with appropriate experience.
