Associate Director, Bioinformatics

Scribe Therapeutics is a molecular engineering company focused on creating best-in-class in vivo therapies that permanently treat the underlying cause of disease. Founded by CRISPR inventors and leading molecular engineers Benjamin Oakes, Brett Staahl, David Savage, and Jennifer Doudna, Scribe is overcoming the limitations of current genome editing technologies by developing custom engineered enzymes and delivery modalities as part of a proprietary, evergreen CRISPR by Design™ platform for CRISPR-based genetic medicine.

We are seeking a highly creative, passionate, and motivated individual to join us in our quest to develop the next generation of CRISPR-based therapeutics. The current role is for Associate Director, Bioinformatics to join our team and advance our platform. The candidate should have a passion for working collaboratively with biologists and bioengineers to enable building the necessary tools for meeting the new frontier of CRISPR-based therapeutics. Additionally, the candidate would bring expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology to enable data-driven approaches for designing genomic studies, conducting analyses, and interpreting results, and will play a key role in advancing CRISPR-based drug development and therapeutic applications.

The candidate will have numerous opportunities for professional growth in a rapidly growing biotechnology start-up, which includes growing into a leadership role of increasing responsibilities and the ability to publish highly impactful work in peer reviewed journals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the bioinformatics team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment to support CRISPR-based gene editing research and development.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and analysis of sequencing data, including whole genome/exon sequencing, transcriptomics, epigenomics sequencing, targeted amplicon seq, and off-target discovery NGS sequencing to guide gene-editing experiments.
  • Develop and implement computational workflows for CRISPR off-target analysis, gene function prediction, and target prioritization using genomics and multi-omics data.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of bioinformatics into the R&D pipeline.
  • Effectively collaborate with members within a fully integrated team to facilitate execution on projects within established timelines
  • Foster a driven, fast-paced, dynamic, and fun environment in which to do rigorous science

Required Skills and Background:

  • Programming languages: Proficiency in bioinformatics-related programming languages such as Python, R, Perl, and Bash.
  • High-throughput data analysis: Expertise in analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data (e.g., RNA-seq, WGS, WES, WGMS, ChIPSeq, single-cell sequencing).
  • Bioinformatics tools: Proficiency with tools like Bowtie, BLAST, BWA, GATK, and gene editing-specific software such as CRISPResso.
  • Cloud computing and HPC: Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments and cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure for handling large datasets.
  • Data visualization: Proficiency in visualizing complex biological data through tools like ggplot2, Seaborn, Matplotlib, and reproducible HTML reports.
  • Experience managing large-scale bioinformatics metadata in databases, data lakes, Benchling, etc.
  • Demonstrated quantitative and scientific thinker as evidenced by a strong publication record.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research team

Preferred Skills and Background:

  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics or equivalent
  • At least 8 years of experience working in an academic or industry lab, with a proven track record of hands-on experience developing bioinformatics pipelines and computational biology methods.
  • Familiarity with CRISPR technologies and therapeutic approaches
  • Familiarity with protein or RNA structure and engineering approaches
  • Data science and machine learning: Experience with machine learning algorithms, data mining, and large-scale biological data analysis.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology, protein engineering,
