Job Description

The Assistant Professor plans and conducts solutions oriented research to document and enhance the sustainability of livestock productions systems in the Texas Panhandle and southern High Plains. The Assistant Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering/Sustainable Livestock Systems has a 100% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research-Amarillo/Bushland. This is a non-tenure track, 12-month appointment. Full academic appointment with the Texas A&M University (TAMU) Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in College Station. Adjunct faculty appointment with the College of Engineering and/or the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX, is expected.

General Duties and Responsibilities:  Plans and conducts solutions-oriented research to document and enhance the sustainability of livestock-production systems in the Texas Panhandle and southern High Plains. Works as a member of a multi-agency/multi-disciplinary faculty team that conducts laboratory and field research on airborne emissions (e. g., gaseous pollutants, greenhouse gases, particulate matter, bioaerosols), manure and wastewater management, and value-added processing of livestock production system co-products, with emphasis on ruminant livestock. Pursues external funding to support the research portfolio. Publishes research in high-impact, refereed journals. Maintains active membership in one or more professional societies. Presents research findings at conferences, workshops, and symposia. Hires and supervises technical support staff and mentors graduate and undergraduate students and post-doctoral research associates. Contributes to the social and cultural growth and enrichment of the agency, the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Amarillo, and the TAMU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAEN) through committee service and ad hoc working groups. Interacts closely with stakeholders, including agricultural producer associations. Collaborates effectively with faculty, staff, and students affiliated with the TAMU Center for Agricultural Air Quality Engineering and Science (CAAQES).

Administrative Relationships: Reports to the Center Director, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Amarillo, TX. Annual performance reviews will also involve the Department Head for BAEN in College Station. Affiliates with the Center for Agricultural Air Quality Engineering and Sciences (CAAQES) at Texas A&M University. 

Required Qualifications:  Earned Ph. D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or closely related, accredited engineering discipline is required. Demonstrated capability to perform independent research and publish results in refereed journals is required. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language and to collaborate as an interdisciplinary team member is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:  Accredited B. S. and M. S. engineering degrees are preferred. Professional engineering licensure or engineer-in-training (E. I. T.) status is preferred. Engineering knowledge and experience in air pollution management, manure and wastewater management, biomass processing, environmental regulations, and livestock agriculture are highly preferred. High-level computer and instrumentation competence is preferred.

Agency Description: Texas A&M AgriLife Research is an independent, premier state agency affiliated with the Texas A&M University System and has 13 regional research centers across the state including the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Amarillo. As of 18 Mar 2024, a new Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center is under construction on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX, with expected occupancy in Aug 2025.

Duty Station: Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Amarillo, TX, with satellite facilities in Bushland, TX, adjacent to the USDA Agricultural Research Service Conservation and Production Research Laboratory and the James Bush Farm.

Area Served: Primarily serves the Texas Panhandle and southern High Plains; partners with university faculty within and outside the TAMU system and state and federal agencies.

Facilities: Incumbent will be a project leader responsible for two laboratories at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Amarillo and will have access to two research cattle feedlots at Bushland. The incumbent may also arrange access to the research cattle feedlot at Nance Ranch owned by West Texas A&M University.
