The Role

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is hiring an Assistant Metro Editor to lead our Law & Justice team. As a member of our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, you will lead our coverage of criminal justice issues and institutions, including the Seattle Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies, as well as state and federal courts in a region growing in population and complexity.

You will edit a team of reporters, some with extensive experience in watchdog reporting, who offer a clear-eyed and compassionate report that helps readers understand the region’s criminal justice trends and institutions. The team seeks to hold power to account, push for transparency and elevate the voices of change agents and those most affected by crime. Ideally, you are a skillful editor and writing coach with experience reporting and/or editing stories about the criminal legal system.

The Law and Justice editor will:

  • Demonstrate strong news judgment, including an ability to decide quickly and confidently on a story’s potential.
  • Post breaking news stories rapidly followed by updates that add more detail and context.
  • Analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness and fairness.
  • Maintain continuous communication with fellow editors and reporters and other departments including photo, graphics and the digital audience team
  • Be willing to work non-standard schedules when news coverage or staffing needs demand it.
  • Be inclusive in coverage, making sure stories include a range of sources and that they fairly represent the rich cultural diversity of our region.
  • Use digital tools to monitor audience interest in stories and regularly offer headline tests to boost readership.
