Position Summary

John Muir Medical Group is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller role, which reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for accurate and timely financial accounting, preparing financial reports, maintaining financial schedules, and ensuring organized and compliant recordkeeping for JMMG. The Assistant Controller position oversees all accounts and reporting systems and manages and directly executes as necessary all accounting procedures, processes, and policies for monthly and annual financial reporting, and audit, tax and business filing compliance. The Assistant Controller has managerial responsibility for current accounting staff consisting of two Senior Accountants.

The Assistant Controller works in close collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer and leaders to develop and maintain financial schedules and tools for accurate reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and special projects. The role seeks to continually improve internal controls, best industry practices, and reporting accuracy and relevance. The Assistant Controller will serve as the key liaison with the external auditors and prepare insightful input for the annual audit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee all financial accounting transaction-processing activities, including accounts receivable, billing, accounts payable, and general ledger functions.

  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial report packages and schedules, including profit and loss statement, balance sheets, and cash flow reports in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Manages and successfully executes financial monthly and year end closing procedures and policies within established timelines, including bank and other reconciliations.

  • Assists in the development and execution of the Annual Budget.

  • Develops and implements financial controls, processes, and procedures to ensure compliance with all financial regulations and best practices to promote risk mitigation and for continuous improvement in accuracy and relevance of reporting.

  • Develops and maintains financial schedules and tools for accurate reporting, budgeting, forecasting and special projects.

  • Develops and maintains quality control and sound operating procedures for staff and department operations and proactively seeks improvement in efficiency and productivity.

  • Ensures accounting methods and procedures are in compliance with GAAP and emerging accounting and taxation standards.

  • Supervises and provides direction to current accounting staff consisting of two senior accountants and monitors the day-to-day activities.

  • Provides coaching and learning and development opportunities for current staff.

  • Liaison with external auditors in facilitating annual audit process including advance schedule oversight and preparation including compliance with GAAP and state, local and Federal filing deadlines.

  • Ensures all tax returns filings, and business licenses are maintained accurately and on time

  • Acts as a key contact for and resolves accounting issues.

  • Periodically attend industry and financial education, network and conference opportunities for accounting and medical group trend awareness, benchmarking, and professional development.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required: CPA designation strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including service as an Assistant Controller and/or Controller with full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, and audit oversight across both income statement and balance sheet.

  • Proven experience leading and developing teams of 2 or more direct reports.

  • 3+ years experience in medical group/hospital or related industry environment preferred.

  • Proficiency in financial management systems with a strong ability to optimize system capabilities and reporting; experience with Workday is a plus.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams or similar tools.

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders, including clinicians and board leadership.

  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to effectively engage with clinicians, executive leadership, board members, and nonclinical staff.

  • Hands-on detail-oriented professional with a high degree of accuracy, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and trustworthiness in handling sensitive financial information.

Hybrid Work Schedule

  • Position requires in office work at our location in Walnut Creek approximately 2-3 days per week.

Salary Range:

  • $140k - $185k plus Bonus

  • Actual Offer to be based on demonstrated/relevant experience and/or licensure.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
