Position Summary:

The Bishop’s School is seeking qualified Assistant Coaches for Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School teams. Available fall coaching opportunities include football, field hockey, cross country, tennis, golf, volleyball, and water polo. The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of the School’s athletic program for their assigned sport. Responsibilities include assisting with practices and competitions, providing individual and team instruction, supporting the academic and personal growth of student-athletes, and fostering a positive and respectful team culture.

Bishop’s coaches help student-athletes prepare for competition, develop their skills, and perform their best individually and as part of a team while upholding the School’s mission and values.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support the Head Coach in all aspects of the School’s athletic program for the assigned sport
  • Assist with the planning and execution of practices, competitions, game-day preparation, equipment management, travel coordination, and team updates as needed
  • implement game and practice plans as directed by the Head Coach
  • Provide individual and team instruction to student-athletes
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of the sport’s rules, strategies, techniques, equipment, physical fitness, and safety practices
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, game officials, coaches, and school staff
  • Understand student-athletes’ goals and assess their strengths to support continued skill development
  • Attend pre-season and post-season coaches’ meetings as required by the Director of Athletics
  • Keep records and documentation and prepare appropriate reports as needed
  • Transport students in a school vehicle, as needed
  • Proactively support the Athletics Department and anticipate the needs of all constituencies
  • Demonstrate flexibility with an academic and athletic calendar, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and seasonal schedule changes
  • Uphold the School’s core values, demonstrate professionalism and tact, and make timely and ethical decisions
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Perform, with a team approach, other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required. College degree preferred.
  • Proven experience as a coach or experience working with students in grades six through twelve
  • Strong knowledge of the applicable team or individual sport and playing rules
  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in the area of sporting specialty
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and support student-athletes
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Ability to adhere to applicable regulations, standards, school policies, and Athletics Department expectations
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning methods and techniques
  • Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, with a willingness to learn new programs, collaboration tools, productivity applications, and learning management systems as needed
  • Reliable, professional, and able to work a flexible athletics schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and seasonal changes in work hours

  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
  • AED, CPR, and First Aid certification
  • NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest
  • NFHS Concussion Training
  • NFHS Heat Illness Training
  • NFHS Implicit Bias Training
  • Lifeguard Certification, swim and water polo coaches only
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification, swim and water polo coaches only
  • USA Football Heads Up Training, football coaches only
  • Driver Safety

The anticipated base compensation for this position is $20-$35 per hour based on experience.
