Assistant Chief Engineer JLL
What this job involves:
As an Assistant Chief Engineer, you'll serve as a technical leader and hands-on expert maintaining critical building systems across our commercial portfolio. This role combines technical excellence with leadership responsibilities—you'll execute complex maintenance and repairs while mentoring your team to deliver exceptional service. Working closely with the Chief Engineer, you'll ensure buildings operate at peak performance, exceeding client expectations while maintaining the highest safety standards. You'll be instrumental in driving JLL's operational excellence and fostering a culture of proactive, in-house problem-solving that delivers measurable cost savings and service quality.
What your day to day will look like:
- You'll lead by example in maintaining and repairing commercial HVAC systems, electrical components, plumbing infrastructure, and building automation systems, ensuring all work meets safety protocols and service level agreements.
- Your technical expertise will guide the team as you diagnose equipment malfunctions, respond to building automation alarms, and execute preventive maintenance through the CMMS work order system.
- You'll conduct facility rounds to proactively identify issues before they impact operations, entering work orders and coordinating timely resolution. Mentoring team members forms a core part of your day—sharing knowledge in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to elevate overall team capabilities.
- You'll support operations and engineering leadership by tracking performance metrics, maintaining accurate logs and documentation, and ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and JLL safety policies.
- Providing exceptional customer service to tenants requires effective communication about maintenance activities, minimizing disruption while solving problems efficiently. When the Chief Engineer is unavailable, you'll step into interim leadership responsibilities, coordinating team activities and managing emergency response situations.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by 6+ years of hands-on experience in commercial building maintenance and engineering with demonstrated expertise in HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and building controls.
- Valid Tennessee Driver's License with ability to arrive on site within 45 minutes for emergency response situations.
- Universal CFC certification to handle refrigerants and maintain compliance with environmental regulations.
- Technical proficiency in diagnosing and repairing commercial HVAC equipment including chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and automation systems using industry-standard tools.
- Strong leadership and teaching abilities to mentor team members, develop safety protocols (JSAs), and enforce health and safety regulations effectively.
- Physical capability to perform demanding work including lifting 50+ pounds, working in various positions (standing, kneeling, climbing), and navigating diverse building environments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), smartphones, and multiple software platforms for documentation and communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional professional certifications in electrical, plumbing, OSHA safety, or HVAC specializations that enhance technical credibility and regulatory compliance.
- Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) monitoring, alarm response, and system diagnostics across multiple platforms.
- Background in developing cost-saving initiatives and documenting measurable operational improvements for client reporting.
- Proven track record in customer service excellence within commercial real estate or facilities management environments.
- Experience training and developing maintenance teams in technical skills and safety practices.
- Knowledge of specific building systems, equipment brands, or control systems common in commercial facilities.
- Familiarity with developing and implementing Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) plans to systematically address recurring issues.
