Job Summary:
Perform tasks involving the application of asphalt on highways/private roadways/parking lots/driveways using handheld tools that require physical labor in building and heavy construction projects.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Prepare road surfaces for hot asphalt material.
• Digs, spreads, rakes, and levels Asphalt.
• Matches and finishes freshly made asphalt paving joints evenly.
• Smooths and adjusts surface irregularities, restores surface finish, spreads asphalt to proper grade, and finishes before compaction.
• Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project.
• Responsible for the finished product while enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions.
• Distribute and rake asphalt material used in construction, repair, and resurfacing.
• Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness to adhere material to the road surface properly.
• Repair utility cuts by removing temporary material and replacing it with permanent hot asphalt material.
• Assists in the placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
• Must partner with other crew members to pave roadways per plan specifications and if need be, to perform tasks of other positions as instructed by crew Foreman to ensure daily schedules are met.
• Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
• Load and unload equipment and materials from trucks and vehicles
• Operate various equipment, machinery & hand tools.
• Clearing and preparing highway work zones and rights of way.
• Control of traffic near, in, and around work zones.
• Perform tasks involving physical labor at the construction site
• Communicate with Supervisor regarding any problems arising, materials required, or any hazards noted.
• Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with other employees to exchange & gather information.
• Collaborate and train other employees.
• Adheres to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
• Regular attendance is required according to company policy to ensure the crew can operate at the normal efficiency level.
• Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
• Performs other related duties of a similar or related nature as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:
• Basic use and knowledge of common tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of asphalt installation.
• Excellent painting, cutting, drilling, and assembling of structures.
• Working knowledge of general hand tools, power tools, and compaction equipment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Able to read and understand drawings, instructions, and blueprints.
• Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
• Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.

Education and Experience:
• High School or equivalent (preferred).
• Minimum one (1) year asphalt/paving experience required.
• Valid Driver’s License with clear MVR may be required.

Physical Requirements:
• Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
• Must be physically able to stand, bend, and walk at least 8 hours per day.
• Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
• May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
• Periodically exposed to high asphalt levels of noise and dust that are typically associated with a construction project.
• Excellent hand, eye, and foot coordination.
• Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance repeatedly or continually throughout shift.
• Regularly works near heavy equipment, power tools, and moving machinery.
• Exposure to outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
• Able to push/pull/lift/carry 80+ lbs. Team lift required for 80+ lbs.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment is required, including but not limited to: steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
• Able to safely operate a personal and/or company vehicle.
• Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions

This position may require routine use of personal and/or company vehicles on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record. Employees in this position may be subject to random Motor Vehicle Record and alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
