Why This Role Matters

As an Architect with 8-15 years of experience building client relationships and design leadership you’ll play a key role in supporting the firm and shaping projects that make a difference—from concept through completion. You’ll collaborate with talented teammates, contribute your expertise, and help us deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions for those we serve.

What You’ll Do 

As the first architect in our Madison, WI office, you will be a key contributor in expanding our architectural practice there. We seek professionals with business development experience who have established client relationships in Madison. Experience with Higher Education / Civic / Government work is preferred.

  • Lead architectural design and project management efforts for projects primarily focusing on higher education, civic, and government clients. 
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the entire Shive-Hattery ecosystem on local, regional, and national projects. 
  • Creating and then implementing business development strategies to grow relationships, win new work, and expand the Shive-Hattery architectural practice locally and regionally.

  • Completed an accredited professional degree program with a bachelor's degree or master's degree in architecture or have equivalent education and experience
  • Licensed to practice architecture in the State of Wisconsin (licenses in other states are valued)
  • Have proven experience in relationship building, business development, winning work, and leading project teams through every phase of the design process through construction.
  • Developed excellent communication skills which set you apart in the profession
  • Continuously demonstrate a high degree of aptitude in critical, creative thinking associated with design and the design process
  • Have led project stakeholder engagement sessions with owners, user, and community groups
  • Are self-motivated and able to problem-solve independently adding great value to your role, while understanding, and supporting the importance of collaboration across project teams and disciplines
  • Embrace building, nurturing, and growing a winning culture at Shive-Hattery with the teams you collaborate with

This position is primarily performed in an office or hybrid environment and may require travel to project sites, other Shive-Hattery office locations or to meet with clients. A full clean driver’s license is required. The role involves sitting, standing, and working at a computer for extended periods. May also require lifting light to medium weight objects of up to 50 lbs., the wearing of PPE and navigating active construction sites. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.

Skills Required

  • 8-15 years of professional architecture experience, including design leadership and client relationship building
  • Completed accredited professional degree in architecture (BArch or MArch) or equivalent education and experience
  • Licensed to practice architecture in the State of Wisconsin
  • Proven experience in business development, winning work, and growing client relationships
  • Experience leading project teams through all phases of design and construction administration
  • Experience with higher education, civic, or government projects
  • Led stakeholder engagement sessions with owners, users, or community groups
  • Excellent communication skills and strong critical, creative design thinking
  • Self-motivated, strong problem-solving ability, and collaborative team orientation
  • Established client relationships in Madison, WI (ability to help expand local practice)
  • Licenses in other states
