As an Application Support Engineer, a typical day involves acting as a software detective by investigating and resolving issues across various components of essential business systems. This role requires a proactive approach to monitoring system performance, diagnosing problems, and ensuring the smooth operation of critical applications. The position demands continuous engagement with complex environments to maintain system stability and support business continuity through timely and effective problem resolution.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Manage, configure, and maintain IBM AIX environments across production, development, and test systems.
Perform installation, patching, and upgrades of AIX operating systems and related software.
Administer and optimize LPARs, VIO servers, and PowerHA clusters for high availability and performance.
Monitor system performance and implement tuning measures to ensure optimal system efficiency.
Manage system backup, restore, and disaster recovery operations (using tools like NIM, TSM, etc.).
Plan and execute capacity management and resource allocation activities.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex incidents, service requests, and performance issues.
Collaborate with application, database, and network teams for cross-functional issue resolution.
Implement and maintain security hardening, patch compliance, and audit requirements.
Automate repetitive operational tasks using shell scripting or other automation tools.
Support migration and modernization initiatives involving AIX and related technologies.
Maintain detailed documentation of configurations, standard operating procedures, and change records.
Participate in on-call rotation and provide 24x7 production support as required.
Mentor and guide junior system administrators within the team
Professional & Technical Skills:
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
10+ years of hands-on experience in AIX system administration in large enterprise environments.
Strong knowledge of AIX 7.x and above, VIOS, and PowerVM technologies.
Experience with PowerHA (HACMP) clustering and disaster recovery setups.
Proficiency with NIM (Network Installation Manager) for system deployment and management.
Good to have exposure with backup solutions (TSM, NetBackup, or equivalent).
Strong shell scripting (Korn, Bash) and automation skills.
Familiarity with SAN, storage provisioning, and file system management (JFS2, GPFS).
Understanding of ITIL processes (Incident, Change, and Problem Management).
Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Additional Information:
Experience with AIX on IBM Power10 or Power9 hardware.
Knowledge of Linux or other UNIX variants.
Exposure to cloud or hybrid infrastructure integrations.
IBM Certified System Administrator – AIX certification.
