Application Engineer II

The Application Engineer II provides advanced technical support and application guidance for Alerton building automation systems. The role works directly with authorized dealers, system integrators, customers, Sales, Engineering, Quality, Offering Management, and Technical Publications to diagnose system and product issues, recommend reliable solutions, support successful deployments and upgrades, and improve customer outcomes.

You will report directly to our Application Engineering Manager, and you’ll work out of our Plymouth, MN. location on a Hybrid work schedule.

The position combines hands-on building automation experience with HVAC controls, Alerton Compass, BACnet, IP networking, controls programming, structured troubleshooting, customer communication, and technical documentation. The engineer is expected to manage moderately complex assignments independently, maintain clear ownership and records, recognize when escalation is required, and convert field experience into reusable knowledge, training, and product feedback.
This role is intended for an experienced technical professional who can support both software and field-level controls issues, including system configuration, databases, controllers, networks, integrations, alarms, trends, schedules, upgrades, and related customer environments.
 

Responsibilities

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Diagnose building automation issues using system architecture, Compass databases, controller configuration, software versions, logs, alarms, trends, network behavior, drawings, specifications, wiring information, and customer observations.  Own customer and dealer technical inquiries from initial problem definition through resolution or effective escalation.
• Provide application guidance for Alerton Compass installation, upgrades, database merging, controls programming, system configuration, graphics, schedules, trends, alarms, controllers, and product compatibility.
• Troubleshoot BACnet and IP network communication, including addressing, Ethernet, TCP/IP, routing, VPN connectivity, DNS, DHCP, and common controller-to-server or device-to-device issues.
• Review controls applications, HVAC sequences, device selection, points, integrations, controller capacity, system diagrams, shop drawings, and specifications to identify design or deployment risks.
• Reproduce and document suspected product issues with complete environment, version, configuration, expected behavior, observed behavior, evidence, business impact, and steps to reproduce.
• Partner with Engineering, Quality, Offering Management, Sales, Cybersecurity, and Technical Publications to validate fixes, clarify limitations, improve documentation, and communicate practical workarounds.
• Create and maintain troubleshooting articles, application notes, FAQs, configuration examples, technical guidance, case notes, and training materials.
• Deliver or support technical demonstrations, customer and dealer training, onboarding, and team knowledge-transfer sessions.
• Manage several active cases and commitments with accurate status, ownership, priority, next steps, and closure documentation.
• Identify recurring case drivers and recommend improvements to products, processes, tools, documentation, warnings, or training.
• Follow applicable quality, cybersecurity, data-protection, confidentiality, export-control, record-retention, and safety requirements.
   

Qualifications

 YOU MUST HAVE

• 2+ years of recent hands-on experience in building automation, HVAC controls, systems integration, controls software engineering, field service, application engineering, or advanced technical support.
• 2+ years’ experience with Alerton Compass, Alerton programming tools, or a comparable commercial building automation platform, including installation, upgrades, database work, merging, programming, commissioning, or troubleshooting. 
• 2+ years of HVAC fundamentals, control sequences, sensors, actuators, controllers, alarms, trends, schedules, graphics, and building automation architectures.
• 2+ years of BACnet and IP networking, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, addressing, routing, VPN connectivity, DNS, DHCP, and common network diagnostic methods. 

WE VALUE

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, building automation, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant technical education and directly applicable professional experience.
• Ability to interpret system architecture diagrams, wiring and shop drawings, point lists, sequences of operation, specifications, submittals, logs, release notes, and technical manuals.
• Experience isolating technical problems, gathering evidence, documenting findings, developing actionable recommendations, and escalating appropriately.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for supporting customers, dealers, Sales, Engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple technical issues independently while maintaining accurate records, commitments, and customer expectations.
• Alerton Certified Engineer, Tridium Niagara certification, or a comparable building-controls credential is preferred; equivalent demonstrable hands-on experience may be considered when certification has not yet been completed.
• Experience with Compass, VisLogic or VisualLogic, BACnet diagnostics, software installation and upgrade workflows, controller programming, database merging, and controller or thermostat troubleshooting is preferred.
• Experience with ServiceNow or another incident-management platform, SQL, Active Directory, Microsoft Azure, Linux, virtual machines, remote-hosted systems, VPN routers, knowledge bases, or Microsoft 365 tools is preferred.
• Experience in creating technical documentation, training content, application notes, troubleshooting procedures, or customer demonstrations is preferred.
• Customer focus, structured problem solving, technical curiosity, ownership, composure, collaboration, professional judgment, and a consistent habit of sharing knowledge.
• Ability to meet applicable work-authorization and travel requirements, subject to final HR confirmation.

The annual base salary range for this position in California, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington State (excluding most major metropolitan areas), and anywhere in Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Vermont, and Virginia is $76,000.00 - $95,000.00. For Washington, DC, and most major metropolitan areas in California, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington State, the annual base salary range is $76,000.00 - $95,000.00.
