Application Engineer I

Position Summary  

Forge Nano is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Application Engineer I to support the commercialization of Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) equipment and processes. Reporting to the Principal Engineer, this role will contribute to engineering design, process development, equipment validation, and customer support activities while working closely with senior engineering personnel.  

The ideal candidate is an early-career engineer who enjoys working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment and has a strong interest in advanced manufacturing technologies, process equipment, and materials engineering. This individual will support technical documentation, engineering analysis, equipment testing, process troubleshooting, and customer-facing deliverables that enable successful deployment and operation of Forge Nano technologies.  

Responsibilities  

Technical Documentation & Engineering Support 

• Assist in the preparation and maintenance of:  

1. Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)  
2. Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)  
3. Engineering Specifications  
4. Equipment Manuals  
5. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)  
6. Customer-Facing Technical Documentation  

• Support the development of engineering documentation required for equipment design, manufacturing, commissioning, and customer acceptance.  

• Maintain accurate records of engineering activities, testing results, and project documentation. 

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure technical documentation is complete, accurate, and up to date. 

Engineering Testing & Process Support 

• Support equipment testing, validation, and commissioning activities under the guidance of senior engineers.  

• Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), equipment build activities, and system verification efforts. 

• Collect, organize, and analyze process and equipment performance data. 

• Document observations and communicate technical findings to project and engineering teams.  

• Support process troubleshooting and root cause investigations related to equipment and process performance. 

• Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.  

Customer & Project Support 

• Support customer-facing engineering activities by assisting with technical presentations, reports, and documentation packages. 

• Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to support project execution and customer deliverables. 

• Assist senior engineers in resolving technical issues and responding to customer inquiries.  

• Support project timelines through effective communication, documentation, and task execution.

Qualifications  

Required Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.  

• 1-3 years of engineering experience, including internships, co-op assignments, research projects, or relevant academic experience. 

• Exposure to process equipment, vacuum systems, manufacturing systems, or related technologies. 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. 

• Ability to analyze technical data and communicate findings effectively. 

• Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and project teams.  

• Proficiency with standard engineering software tools and Microsoft Office applications.  

Preferred Qualifications & Experience 

• Experience working with vacuum systems, thin-film deposition technologies, semiconductor equipment, or advanced manufacturing systems. 

• Familiarity with engineering documentation standards and technical drawing interpretation.  

• Exposure to process development, equipment validation, or laboratory testing environments.  

• Experience analyzing engineering or manufacturing data.  

• Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and structured problem-solving techniques.  

Work Environment  

This position operates in both an office environment and a battery prototype manufacturing environment. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) may include: safety glasses, protective gloves, steel-toe footwear, lab coat, and powered air purifying respirator (PAPR). Hard Hat Strict adherence to company policies, operating procedures, and safety protocols is required. 

Physical Requirements  

This position requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, climbing, bending, and use of hands to operate tools, equipment, and computers. The employee must regularly communicate with team members and stakeholders in both office and manufacturing settings. Occasional lifting, carrying, and moving of equipment, tools, and spare parts may be required. The noise level within manufacturing and operational environments is generally moderate.  

Travel  

Up to 15% travel may be required to support customer sites, project activities, equipment installations, testing programs, training, and other business needs.  

Compensation & Benefits  

Salary Range: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 annually. The salary range for this exempt position will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and alignment with internal equity among current employees.
