The Role

Interaxon (Muse) is a neurotechnology company building brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Our Muse EEG headbands measure brain activity and deliver real-time feedback on mental states like focus, calm, and stress. Muse is used by clinicians, researchers, athletes, and individuals to support mindfulness, sleep, and mental health. www.choosemuse.com

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Android Developer to help us maintain and evolve our Android app while shaping its migration to Jetpack Compose + Kotlin Flow. Our current codebase uses XML-based layouts, RxJava, LiveData, and MVVM, but we’re planning a progressive shift toward modern tooling — and we’re open to candidates with expertise in either approach.

Your work will directly impact how people interact with their mental and emotional wellness through real-time neurofeedback. You’ll build tech that’s used by clinicians, researchers, and individuals around the world to improve lives in measurable ways.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain features using Kotlin, MVVM, and either XML-based UI or Jetpack Compose
  • Contribute to the migration from RxJava + LiveData to Kotlin Flow + StateFlow + Jetpack Compose.
  • Help define architecture improvements with long-term maintainability in mind
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ship clean, high-performance code.
  • Optimize app performance and memory usage, especially in relation to real-time data and UI updates
  • Integrate shared libraries and third-party modules, including native and WebView-based components.
  • Participate in sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and technical design sessions.

Requirements

Must Have:

  • 4+ years of experience building, maintaining, and shipping Android apps.
  • A degree in Computer Science or a related field, with strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin, Android architecture patterns (MVVM), and reactive state programming.
  • Experience with either:
    • XML track: RxJava, LiveData, XML layouts, MVVM, and willingness to support Jetpack Compose migration.
    • Jetpack Compose track: Deep experience with Compose and Kotlin Flow/StateFlow, with comfort maintaining some XML/RxJava code.
  • Strong collaboration skills with a thoughtful, pragmatic approach to technical discussions.
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD workflows, and Agile development.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Firebase, Firestore, Crashlytics, or Fastlane.
  • Exposure to real-time data processing or hardware-integrated Android apps
  • Prior contributions to Jetpack Compose adoption or reactive architecture refactors
  • Exposure to embedded content via React or Unity in a WebView.
  • Some experience with iOS or cross-platform development.
  • A published app in Google Play
