About Tiko

Tiko is an African nonprofit committed to strengthening the potential and resilience of adolescent girls across Africa. We address the “Triple Threat” of unintended pregnancy, HIV infection, and sexual and gender-based violence by building local health ecosystems that provide stigma-free, no-cost, quality-assured services.

Our model brings together key local actors: community-based organizations (CBO) with peer mobilisers who act as health companions to girls; public and private health clinics that deliver care; and retail partners that redeem Tiko Miles -our behavior-change incentive programme that rewards service uptake and feedback.

We invest in partners by strengthening CBO capacity, training frontline workers and providers, supporting clinic quality improvement, and compensating partners based on performance. Our technology platform connects all actors by enabling referrals, verifying service delivery, facilitating payments, and generating real-time data.

Tiko operates in six countries: Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burkina Faso, South Africa, and Nigeria, with additional offices in Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. For a clear overview of our work, we recommend watching this short video.

Globally, our team consists of +250 enthusiastic, international colleagues. Whether you are working from our biggest office in Nairobi, the fast-growing office in South Africa, or from home, our people are young, and our culture is global and dynamic. Our work environment is fast-paced, informal, and friendly.

We are open to remote work for this position and will happily accept applicants from anywhere in Portugal, Kenya and South Africa.

The Job

In this role, you will define the technical strategy for our data environment while mentoring another Analytics Engineering Senior to build, maintain, and scale reliable, well-documented data models. Sitting right at the center of our data ecosystem, you will collaborate across Data Engineering, Analytics, Product, Finance, and Operations.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Modelling & Semantic Architecture: Oversee the architecture of performant, cost-effective dbt and Tableau data models, establishing clean semantic layers with validated metrics, standardized business logic, and dimensional modeling best practices.
  • Governance & Engineering Standards: Enforce software best practices (CI/CD, Git, automated testing) alongside data contracts and playbooks to ensure exceptional data reliability and elevate organizational self-service analytics.
  • Technical Leadership & Enablement: Mentor and grow the analytics engineering team while bridging the gap between Data Engineers, Analysts, Product, and Architecture to align technical strategy with core business goals.
  • You document your work and make sure that your documentation is clear and understandable for future use by others.
  • Our team works in an agile way, and you will be part of the rituals and practices.

About you

You care deeply about the business context behind the numbers, not just the pipelines that process them. You sit naturally at the intersection of software engineering discipline and business strategy. You are a builder and a mentor who takes pride in turning chaotic raw tables into clean, trustworthy semantic layers, and you get genuine satisfaction from enabling analysts and non-technical stakeholders to self-serve with total confidence.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience leading, mentoring, or guiding data teams, alongside strong stakeholder management experience (particularly with Product and Architecture leads)
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in Analytics Engineering and BI Engineering
  • Advanced proficiency with dbt, SQL, and analytics-focused data modelling (dimensional modelling, ELT/ETL design)
  • Strong experience building and optimising data models within Tableau
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD, Git, automated testing, pull request workflows, and modern data stack tooling
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex technical data concepts into clear, business-friendly language
  • Fluent written and verbal English skills
  • You are currently based in Portugal / South Africa / Kenya

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Airflow or workflow orchestration tools
  • Background in Data Engineering, cloud data warehouses, or lakehouse architectures
  • Exposure to streaming architectures / event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis)
  • Hands-on experience building dedicated metric layers (dbt Semantic Layer, MetricFlow, LookML)
