About Piano

Piano helps the world’s leading digital businesses grow revenue by understanding and influencing customer behavior. Our platform unifies analytics, audience segmentation, and commercial personalization in one AI-driven system, enabling media companies and digital services to maximize the value of every user interaction. Headquartered in Amsterdam with offices across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, Piano serves hundreds of global brands including the BBC, Deutsche Telekom, Nikkei, and the Wall Street Journal.

At Piano, engineers and data scientists tackle complex technical challenges at scalefrom globally distributed systems and real-time machine learning models to production LLM applications that are transforming how our customers work. We embrace a culture of innovation, collaboration, and craftsmanship where you’ll solve meaningful problems that impact millions of users worldwide.

The Role

We’re looking for an AI Engineer to join our Data Science team and help bring AI capabilities to life across Piano’s product suite. This is not a single-product role—you’ll work on a range of initiatives where large language models, machine learning, and intelligent automation can create real value for our customers and internal teams.

You’ll design and build production systems that leverage LLMs for tasks like classification, summarization, content understanding, and conversational AI. You’ll collaborate closely with backend and frontend engineering teams to integrate AI into existing products, and you’ll contribute to the smart decisioning logic that powers Piano’s targeting and personalization solutions. The work spans the full lifecycle—from prototyping and evaluation to deployment and optimization in production.

While the role is centered on applied AI engineering, we highly value experience with traditional ML systems. The day-to-day work blends LLM-based development with classical machine learning, so a candidate who can move fluidly between both worlds will thrive here.

What You’ll Do

Build and operate AI-powered systems

  • Design, implement, and maintain production services that use LLMs for classification, extraction, summarization, and generation tasks across Piano’s product suite.
  • Operate retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and optimize retrieval quality through experimentation with embeddings, chunking strategies, and ranking algorithms.
  • Develop agentic workflows that enable AI systems to reason over data, call tools, and execute multi-step tasks.

Infuse products with AI

  • Collaborate with product, backend, and frontend teams to identify high-impact opportunities for AI integration in Piano’s platform.
  • Contribute to building smart decisioning logic for targeting and personalization—bridging LLM-based approaches with traditional ML models like propensity scoring and segmentation.
  • Prototype, validate, and productionize new AI-powered features that simplify how customers configure and interact with our platform.

Optimize for production

  • Optimize LLM inference for cost, latency, and quality through context engineering, caching, model selection, and batching.
  • Deploy and operate services on Kubernetes with robust CI/CD pipelines; instrument, monitor, and continuously improve reliability.
  • Build evaluation frameworks to measure AI system quality—both during development and in production—and catch regressions over time.

Manage knowledge and data

  • Build and maintain knowledge management systems—ingesting, organizing, and versioning content so that the right information reaches the right AI application at the right time.
  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines that feed decision-making systems in real-time.

What We’re Looking For

Must-have

  • M.Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field or alternatively, a proven track record of delivering complex ML/AI systems in production.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent building production ML or AI systems.
  • Fluency in Python and strong software engineering fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar).
  • Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning fundamentals.
  • Excellent communication in English.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with agentic AI frameworks and tool-use patterns.
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks like React.
  • Familiarity with ML pipeline tooling (Airflow or similar) and model monitoring in production.
  • Experience with vector databases, embedding models, and search/retrieval systems.
  • Background in analytics, personalization, or digital media domains.

Why Piano

  • You’ll work in a cross-functional team infusing Piano products with AI and ML, with direct impact on how notable global media brands serve hundreds of millions of users.
  • You’ll have real influence over the tech stack and the freedom to choose your tools.
  • You’ll collaborate with highly skilled peers across data science, ML engineering, and productin a company that moves fast and values craftsmanship.
  • Flexible working hours, competitive compensation, and benefits.
  • Laptop of your choice (Windows/Mac)
  • Modern office with dedicated seating
  • Phone plan
  • Life insurances

Applicants must have authorization to work in this jurisdiction without sponsorship from Piano.

Skills Required

  • 5+ years in software engineering, preferably building production ML or data-driven products.
  • Fluent in Python.
  • Experience with modern front-end tech (React or comparable).
  • Experience shipping and operating production ML/AI services (batch & real-time).
  • Cloud-native mindset: Docker, Kubernetes, observability, CI/CD, version control.
  • Strong engineering skillset with ability to create production-grade code.
  • Excellent communication in English; comfortable explaining trade-offs to both engineers and execs.
  • Experience with vector databases, embeddings and retrieval-augmented generation.
  • Exposure to MLOps stacks.
  • Familiarity with analytics or personalization domains (propensity scoring, attribution, segmentation).
  • Understanding of JVM languages (Java) or Node.js back-ends.
