The Role
Terraformation’s mission is to rapidly restore native forests and reverse climate change. This role directly supports that mission by redesigning agroforestry systems within a reforestation carbon (ARR) project to ensure that forest restoration and conservation, community livelihoods, customary land-use systems, and financial viability are mutually reinforcing rather than in conflict. The consultant will provide decision-ready analysis that enables Terraformation to move forward responsibly with FPIC-aligned, investable restoration pathways.

Objective
Support the redesign of agroforestry systems within a large-scale ARR project to balance indigenous livelihoods, carbon sequestration, and financial viability within customary, clan-based land-use contexts.

Location
Remote, with preference for those based in the Philippines or Southeast Asia (field travel required)

Duration & Contract Terms
- Start date as soon as possible
- Initial 6-month contract under a Master Services Agreement (MSA)
- Estimated level of effort (LOE) around 10-15 hours/week (part-time), except during site visits, where up to 10-hr days are expected.
- Current site visit plans are for 6 consecutive days between Jan 12 and Feb 8, 2026, not including travel time to and from Mindanao.
- Renewal is possible based on performance, project needs, and funding availability
- Payments will be made upon satisfactory completion and acceptance of deliverables under each task order, in line with the specified LOE, deliverables, and reimbursable travel costs.

Deliverables
All tasks and deliverables will be defined by way of a task order. The first task order will include the following deliverables expected by Feb 28, 2026:
1. Mindanao field site visit and report on existing agroforestry systems in the project region.
- Site visit is expected to last ~6 days between Jan 12 and Feb 8, 2026, with the goals of collecting data on existing agroforestry systems and practices, production, income and market aspects including customary clan-based land use, household access to agroforestry plots, and gendered labor dynamics.
2. Agroforestry design evaluation.
- Critical feedback on all aspects of agroforestry system designs (e.g. species mix, density, phasing), including pros/cons and tradeoffs. Should include effects on crop yields per hectare and feasibility within clan-based land-use and labor availability.
3. Agroforestry financial viability analysis
- Assessment of the coffee and cacao supply chains in Mindanao (other fruit tree crops mentioned by local communities can be added), including existing buyers, prices per kilo of various levels of processed produce,  costs including those beyond plantation establishment, and any other considerations that affect project financial viability and the revenue received by local farmers including price volatility, quality requirements, market access constraints, and distribution of value along the supply chain.
4. Short, decision-oriented memo summarizing viable pathways forward for the project

Responsibilities

  • Assess existing agroforestry systems in project areas, including species composition, planting design, production, income, and labor dynamics
  • Conduct a field visit to collect agroforestry, market, and household-level livelihood data within customary clan-based land-use contexts
  • Design and evaluate alternative agroforestry system configurations (species mix, density, spatial layout, phasing)
  • Quantify trade-offs between agroforestry participation, household income, carbon sequestration, and project IRR
  • Identify design levers to reduce costs, improve productivity, and optimize timing of cashflows
  • Assess constraints to adoption at household and clan levels, including land access, labor availability, and upfront capital
  • Collaborate with Terraformation carbon and finance teams to integrate findings into existing project models
  • Deliver concise, decision-oriented recommendations for Terraformation leadership and investment committees

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years experience in agroforestry, non-timber forestry products, or tree crop systems
  • Demonstrated experience linking agroforestry design to financial outcomes and community benefits
  • Experience designing or evaluating agroforestry systems under real-world adoption or implementation constraints (e.g., labor, land access, capital, market access)
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to translate technical findings into clear decision guidance
  • Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork in remote rural settings
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience in the Philippines or comparable Southeast Asian contexts
  • Experience working on carbon projects or climate finance initiatives
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples or community-led land-use projects
  • Familiarity with FPIC processes and livelihood-sensitive project design
