The Accounting Manager is responsible for assisting the Controller with the management of the Accounting Department’s day-to-day processes and supervision of accounting staff. Duties of the position include management of the general ledger, inclusive of fixed asset management, cash management, and the monthly close and reconciliation processes for all enterprise accounting functions. The Accounting Manager is to ensure the completion and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and the accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial reporting.

Job Description

CORE SCOPE OF POSITION

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation and completion of monthly financial statements including, review and approval of journal entries; timely closing of the general ledger and all other ledger types.
  • Completes and/or manages the completion of all necessary journal entries to accurately record and reflect the activities of Viejas enterprises.
  • Performing reconciliation of general ledger accounts and providing monthly internal and external financial results as needed.
  • Reconciles payroll related expenses including incentives and 401(k) match, preparation of accruals, and oversees the reconciliation of liability accounts for these expenses.
  • Works with the finance team to ensure that monthly key financials and annual/quarterly reporting and budgeting are completed accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Ensures that Viejas business requirements are met with respect to the general ledger reports.
  • Performs ad hoc analyses as required.
  • Writes, or works with the finance team to write, general ledger reports as needed to support the business.
  • Works with the finance team to maintain all budgets and forecasts in the general ledger system as needed.
  • Collaborates with and supports various department ERP system issues and questions.
  • Performs general training on general ledger as needed.
  • Acts as a lead on the financial testing of system upgrades, patches, and interfaces.
  • Maintains and assigns system security as needed.
  • Works with the casino’s external and internal auditors to facilitate audits and other procedures as directed. Coordinates the accurate and timely preparation of audit work papers.
  • Manages the controls and policies over fixed assets and construction in progress, to ensure that all items are properly recorded, properly authorized, reconciled, and controlled.
  • Performs regular reviews of all process flows, procedures, and internal controls surrounding the Accounting function. Ensures that minimum control standards are applied with best practices with respect to data integrity, process efficiency, and cost containment.
  • Builds constructive and effective relationships with other managers across the organization.
  • Assists other departments with both external and internal compliance and reporting requirements as needed.
  • Keeps up to date with current business strategies in the industry.
  • Ensures that a clean, safe, hazard-free work environment is maintained.
  • Adheres to all company and department policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Manages and directs the performance of the accounting team to ensure the overall department objectives and financial goals are met.
  • Works with management to ensure staffing levels and schedules make efficient use of labor while meeting business level needs.

  • Manages the department in the absence of the Controller.

SUPERVISION

  • Works with accounting management to address team member performance and behavior concerns; develops plans for improvement; takes necessary corrective action.
  • Responsible for setting expectations, holding the team members accountable, and providing necessary support to assist them in meeting the organization’s guest service and performance expectations.
  • Leads a team to work on projects. May oversee a unit.
  • Responsible for the hiring, staffing, and termination decisions.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Bachelor's degree in accountant, finance, business administration, or related area from a four year university OR a non-business degree from a four year university.
  • MBA or CPA preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • 7 to 10 years of related education/experience.
  • 5 to 7 years of related supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Experience with Workday and other ERP systems a plus.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent time/project management and organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high stress, and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle projects with multiple deadlines. 
  • Ability to multitask and work well under stress.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to adjust to change.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours during the day or evening including weekends, holidays, and all blackout dates.
