About Us

Wild Alaskan Company’s mission is to accelerate humanity’s transition to sustainable food systems by fostering meaningful, interconnected relationships between human beings, wild seafood and the planet.

We deliver wild-caught, sustainable seafood to households across the United States. Powered by our custom-built eCommerce platform and three generations of history and expertise in the Alaskan fishing industry, we constantly strive to meet our promise of a top-notch product and experience. And we do it all in a fully-remote environment that is fast-paced, challenging, and fun.

Description of Role

Reporting to the Controller, as a Wild Alaskan Accountant you’ll be the responsive, friendly problem-solver who gets our vendors paid on time while maintaining impeccable documentation and process compliance. You’ll play a key role in supporting the timely preparation of financial statements each month and the administration of some of the programs that make Wild Alaskan a great place to work. You’ll be part of a small but scrappy team that is passionate about continuous learning and improvement, with the chance to help build a world-class function.

The Ideal Candidate

Few things are as satisfying to you as a checklist with each item crossed off. With an eagle eye for detail, you love getting things done, and getting them done right. When you hear ‘a stickler for detail’ you can’t help but think it’s a compliment. When handed a problem, you don’t hesitate to step in and figure things out, working respectfully with people until the pieces all fall into place, every i is dotted and t is crossed.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage the new vendor setup process, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Process a large number of vendor invoices and credit card transactions.
  • Review vendor invoices against purchase orders for accuracy of quantity, unit price, terms of payment, and other charges.
  • Act as a point of contact for dispute resolution, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to address and resolve invoicing issues.
  • Respond to vendor inquiries, including credit reference requests.
  • Maintain contract management tracking and digital record-keeping.
  • Conduct regular account reconciliations to verify the accuracy of financial transactions.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation in accordance with company policy and accounting best practices.
  • Monitor and code daily bank transactions.
  • Reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
  • Prepare monthly accounting entries for various business transactions, including inventory, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, and leases.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations with supporting schedules; maintaining all in an audit-ready fashion.
  • Provide support during audits, ensuring all relevant AP documentation is readily available and in compliance with company policies.
  • Monitor and process mail sent to Wild Alaskan’s scanning service.
  • Onboard new users to the expense reimbursement platform and process expense reimbursement requests.
  • Attend regular team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses as requested.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or economics or equivalent professional experience.
  • 2+ years of related accounting experience.
  • Understanding of accounting principles and knowledge of accounting functions (accounts payables, accounts receivables, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, etc.).
  • Excellent attention to detail, impeccable accuracy, and strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with at least one accounting platform (Quickbooks, NetSuite, SAP, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to clearly communicate with teammates.
  • Proven ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
  • Spreadsheet skills: pivot tables, conditional aggregation, summary statistics, advanced visualization and reporting (Excel, Google Sheets, etc.).

Nice to Haves

  • Prior experience in eCommerce.
  • Prior accounts payable experience.
  • Prior experience as part of a remote-first company.
  • Passion for sustainability and seafood.

The starting salary range for this position is $50,000 - $75,000, commensurate with skills and experience. Wild Alaskan’s benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance, 401k, PTO, safe/sick time, vacation, parental leave and more, as well as a delicious box of free fish every month.

What We Do

The Wild Alaskan Company offers an online direct-to-consumer membership service for premium wild-caught seafood. By joining our monthly seafood program, you’ll receive a box of sustainably harvested seafood every month. We source the highest quality seafood from top Alaskan and Pacific Northwest fisheries and ship it directly to your home.

If you’re like most Americans, you probably find it difficult to consistently buy premium grade seafood. Seafood fraud is running rampant in many parts of this country. In fact, a 2015 Oceana report showed that more than 40% of salmon in grocery stores and restaurants was mislabeled.

So, unless you have a trusted source, you’re likely not eating what you think you are. With the Wild Alaskan Company, our goal is to create a fully transparent sea-to-table experience, where you always:

1. Know the source of your wild-caught, sustainably harvested seafood.

2. Have direct and regular access to a variety of wild-caught species from Alaska, which we’ll curate for you based on seasonality and availability.

Think of us as your personal fishmonger!
