About us
We are a fast-growing, AI-based remote yard activity reporting company serving clients across North America. Our Finance & Accounting team in Toronto/Mississauga supports a multi-entity, multi-currency group with operations in four different countries. We are looking for a hands-on Accountant who is comfortable owning real balance-sheet areas end to end, working to a hard monthly calendar, and improving the way things get done as they go.
Position summary
The Accountant is an individual contributor within the HQ accounting team, reporting to the Controller.
The successful candidate will personally prepare prepaid and accrual schedules, lease and amortization schedules, intercompany entries, payroll journals and the recurring lender and sponsor reporting packages, and will be the day-to-day finance contact for several vendor and service-provider relationships.
The scope of this role is deliberately broad. Beyond the recurring deliverables listed below, ad hoc analysis and reporting requests are a regular part of the work, and the mix of responsibilities will change and expand as the person grows into the role and as the business does.
Key responsibilities
Month-end close and reconciliations
- Prepare assigned month-end journal entries and close the related accounts to the published close calendar.
- Own the prepaid expense and amortization schedules, including set-up of new prepaids and monthly release.
- Own the accrued payables schedule: build the accrual, track it against supporting engagement letters, contracts and purchase commitments, reverse on invoice receipt, and explain the residual.
- Maintain right-of-use asset and lease liability schedules, including re-measurement when payment terms change.
- Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations for assigned accounts and clear reconciling items rather than carrying them forward.
- Prepare and post intercompany entries between entities, and reconcile intercompany balances so they eliminate cleanly on consolidation.
- Support the monthly consolidated reporting package prepared with our Subsidiary finance teams, including review of the submitted trial balances and follow-up on variances.
Treasury, banking and lender reporting
- Report daily and month-end cash positions across all bank accounts and currencies.
- Prepare and support covenant reports.
- Prepare the monthly reporting package for different stakeholders.
- Coordinate banking activities with the Controller and CFO, and maintain the supporting records.
- Prepare the payment release file for approval, verify that supporting approvals exist, and release approved payments for approval.
Payroll and payroll tax
- Process/support/backup semi-monthly payroll for the Canadian and US entities in conjunction with our payroll provider, including new hires, terminations, benefit changes, bonus calculation and off-cycle payments.
Vendor, intercompany and outsourced-provider reconciliation
- Reconcile monthly invoices from outsourced service providers and staffing partners to contracts, headcount, hours and approved bonus data, and resolve discrepancies before release.
- Review professional fee invoices against engagement letters and flag amounts outside scope.
- Support accounts payable and accounts receivable colleagues on technical questions, account coding and entity allocation.
Audit, tax and compliance
- Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests for the annual group audit.
- Support the external tax provision and corporate tax compliance process, and the annual SR&ED claim, including gathering and reconciling the underlying cost data.
- Maintain documentation to support sales tax, indirect tax and statutory filings across jurisdictions.
Requirements
- A university degree or college diploma in accounting, finance or a closely related discipline.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle month-end close ownership.
- Demonstrated experience preparing prepaid, accrual, lease and intercompany schedules without supervision.
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-currency environment.
- Working knowledge of IFRS and ASPE.
- Hands-on experience with a mid-market ERP system; ideally NetSuite or equivalent.
- Advanced Excel (lookups, pivots, large reconciliations built from raw system extracts).
- Familiarity with Canadian and US payroll, sufficient to prepare payroll journals, reconcile payroll liability accounts and provide backup coverage.
- Strong written communication — much of this role is explaining a number to someone who did not prepare it.
- Comfortable working to deadlines in a month-end environment, including peak-period flexibility.
What we offer
- Broad exposure across a multi-jurisdiction group — close, reconciliations, treasury, reporting, tax and audit — in a single role.
- Direct working relationships with the Controller and CFO, and visibility with our lender, sponsor and external advisors.
- A finance function actively being rebuilt and documented, with real scope to shape how processes run.
- Competitive compensation and benefits, and support for professional development.
This role will require the candidate to complete background checks (includes but not limited to: references, educational verification, criminal check, credit check - where applicable). Certain roles may also require testing.
