We are seeking a motivated and curious 2027 Summer Intern, Cloud Engineer (AWS / Azure) to join our team and support cloud DevOps, governance, and security compliance work across AWS and Azure environments. You'll work on a team that treats AI and automation as core engineering practice, so this is a hands-on opportunity to build real-world experience in cloud governance, security, and AI-assisted automation while contributing to the evolution of our Fathom Platform within the SCS environment.
This is an entry-level, 10-week, full-time internship expected to begin in June and end in August. Work will be hybrid from Reston, VA. Pay is expected to be $27 per hour for undergraduate interns and $32 per hour for graduate interns. At this time, we are unable to provide housing nor relocation assistance for this position.
What You'll Do
You'll rotate across the team's core areas of work, with specific projects assigned based on team priorities at the time:
- Cloud DevOps & Automation: Support infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD automation used to build and maintain cloud environments. Help write, test, and document automation that provisions and manages resources across AWS and Azure.
- Cloud Governance: Assist in the administration and governance of AWS and Azure organizations, including account/subscription structure, identity and access management (IAM), and policy-based guardrails that keep environments consistent and compliant.
- Security & ATO Compliance: Contribute to security tooling and compliance efforts that support Authorization to Operate (ATO), including work aligned to security control baselines (such as NIST 800-53), vulnerability and posture management, and evidence/documentation for audits.
- AI-Enabled Engineering: Work the way the team works - using AI-assisted development as a core practice. This includes:
- AI IDE development - using AI-enabled IDEs and coding assistants to generate, refactor, and document scripts, infrastructure-as-code, and automation, then validating and correcting the output before use.
- Spec-driven development - turning requirements into clear specifications that guide implementation, and using those specs to plan and structure work.
- Productivity-as-code - capturing repeatable work as reusable prompts, workflows, agents, and automation so that effort compounds into leverage for the whole team rather than one-off tasks.
- Collaborate with engineers on cloud-native products and services, and participate in team meetings, code reviews, and documentation efforts.
Skills & Tools You May Work With
Exact tools vary by project, but you'll gain exposure to:
- Cloud platforms: AWS and Azure (multi-account / multi-subscription administration, IAM, networking, and security services)
- DevOps & IaC: infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Pulumi, Terraform, or CloudFormation; GitHub / GitHub Actions)
- Governance: organization-level policy and guardrail management, identity and access management
- Security & compliance: cloud security posture and vulnerability management tooling, and security control frameworks supporting ATO (e.g., NIST 800-53)
- AI-enabled engineering: AI-enabled IDEs and coding assistants, spec-driven development, and productivity-as-code practices, applied with appropriate review and governance
