Department Summary
This position is embedded within the Pathology Core labs of the Genentech Research Pathology Department and is focused on development and application of tissue based procedures and imaging protocols. The successful candidate will provide scientific and technical expertise for tissue-based histopathology assays and analysis to support research scientists and pathologists who discover and develop drugs for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, ocular and neurological diseases. The Core labs at Genentech are state-of-the art labs equipped with novel technologies and automated platforms, and develops techniques primarily for discovery research using both standard and internally developed methodologies.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, onsite.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team as a summer intern, focusing on improving tissue based methodologies for immunofluorescent imaging and analysis. This position will involve optimizing processes for immunofluorescent staining, scanning slides, interpretation of signal to noise, and data analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists in the Digital Pathology and Histopathology sections of the Pathology department to contribute to cutting-edge projects that have the potential to significantly impact the field of biomedical research.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program).
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Master's Degree.
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors:
Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Computational Pathology or Biomedical Engineering.
Required Skills:
Knowledge of histology, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence processes.
Experience with microscopy and fluorescent imaging and analysis.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

Experience with Google apps is preferable (gDocs, gSlides, etc).
Familiarity with various image formats and image conversion is ideal.
Experience working in high performance computing environments is a plus.
Programming language (Matlab, Python, etc.).
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
