2025 Summer Intern - Human Genetics
Department Summary
The mission of Human Genetics within Genentech is to leverage public and internal genetic data to elucidate causal biological mechanisms driving human disease for purposes of drug discovery and development. This mission is supported by the research foci of the group, which range from computational methods development to targeted analyses of disease-relevant phenotypes. This year, we are searching for a motivated summer intern to improve variant effect and causal gene and cell type predictions from AI/ML models.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site
The Opportunity

Develop techniques for extracting biological signal from GWAS using ML models of regulatory sequence

Contextualize and predict the impact of non-coding variation using ML models

Train/finetune regulatory models on disease relevant genomics data (primarily single-cell ATAC-seq)

Participate in talks, journal clubs, and general research laboratory activities

Ideally contribute to publication(s) resulting from your summer work
Program Highlights

Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education:
-
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: Bioinformatics, Genomics, Genetics, Computational Biology, Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Science
Required Skills:
-
Proficiency in Python and experience with frameworks for machine learning inference (e.g. pytorch, lightning)

Working knowledge of techniques for statistical analysis (hypothesis testing, Bayesian inference etc)

Familiarity with fundamental ML concepts and interpretation techniques such as transformers, saliency maps

Knowledge of GWAS and related genetics-based analyses
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location of California is $50 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
