Efficiency is key in rocket design, and on Ryan Kuhn’s team, it all comes down to tools. “The real power is the efficiency these tools unlock — we need orders of magnitude fewer people than were necessary during early rocket development,” he said. In their simplest form, projects begin as “hand calcs,” later winding up in CAD, MATLAB or “bespoke turbomachinery design software.” As a leader who oversees structures, engines and propulsion mechanisms, Kuhn removes obstacles and keeps his team’s priorities and resources aligned to reach the most rewarding stage of all: seeing rockets come to life.
