Why Leaving a 6-Figure Job Was The Best Decision I Made in 2015

In late September of 2015, I decided to leave my position at TransUnion. On the surface, that job should have been the logical next step for my career.

I had spent the majority of my career at a mobile/digital agency where I lead my own team, sat on our leadership board, and felt I was able to make an impact with our business and top-tier clients every day.

Unfortunately, as things sometimes go in life, the opportunity at TransUnion wasn’t what I thought it would be and I found myself burnt out and in a difficult position: continue to work somewhere where I wasn’t happy or take some much needed time off to recharge. The former kept a paycheck coming in – the biggest of my career – while the latter was a risk financially but, ultimately, it felt right.

With that, I made the decision to leave and took the last quarter of 2015 to travel, spend time with family, play my guitar more, enjoy Chicago and, from a professional standpoint, rethink what I want to do and who I want to be in 2016.

It was difficult as I am kind of a lost soul without a job. Opportunities knocked at times but I politely declined. It was more important to refuel and take back control over my career. Somehow, I stuck to the deal I made with myself and I can confidently say I made the right decision.

Now, more than ever, I’m ready to start my search in earnest. I’m ready to find a true home and be a player on the right team again.

I can’t wait to contribute to the right company with a great culture.

I’m excited at what’s next and where it may take me.

Here’s to 2016 and what’s ahead for all of us.
