A Pathway for Commercializing Physician Innovations

TranS1® recognizes that the most important, game-changing surgical innovations to improve patient care come from those closest to patient care: doctors.   Our company is built upon the notion that if we can fairly and ethically provide a vehicle to empower doctors to make healthcare better, then we should.

TranS1's R&D efforts align with two key aims:  improve patient outcomes and make healthcare less expensive.   A key driver of our R&D efforts is the notion that by reducing the trauma that patients face associated with surgery, we can decrease the risk of complication and accelerate recovery time.   By reducing lengthy hospital stays, we not only hasten patient recovery, but also dramatically reduce the costs associated with spine surgery.   Our AxiaLIF+® product, for instance, enables minimally invasive fusion of L5-S1 joint of the spine, as illustrated by this ABC News feature.

We have directed our team of engineers, Ph.Ds and patent attorneys to support physician-conceived concepts to improve patient care.   We invite surgeons who believe in our aims and who have promising ideas to discuss opportunities to collaborate with TranS1 in an effort to make care better.

TranS1 welcomes collaboration with doctors.  With that said, we understand the need to both provide fair market incentive to physicians seeking to commercialize their surgical-related inventions, and also the need to comply with the many statutes governing healthcare.  Our company has established rigid policies to ensure compliance with the Anti-Kickback Safe Harbor and other relevant laws.  Under no circumstances does TranS1 compensate any physician for any referrals.   Moreover, TranS1's corporate structure itself is designed to fall within the "Small Entity Investment Interests Safe Harbor" of the Anti-Kickback Statute.

However, TranS1 also believes that physicians should have fair incentive to invent and commercialize technologies to make surgical care better.  In appropriate circumstances, we have entered into royalty arrangements with physicians who wish to collaborate with TranS1 to develop cutting edge surgical technologies.  With this approach, TranS1 can leverage our R&D team along with our sales distribution network to make promising physician innovations commercially viable.

Innovation drives TranS1.  Through a unique relationship with Denver-based patent law firm Rocky Mountain Patent, TranS1 can efficiently protect the intellectual property associated with physician innovations.   Several other patents will be filed soon.  TranS1 also maintains a robust portfolio of issued patents related to advancement in spine surgery.

Separately, our team of in-house and preferred of-counsel lawyers have successfully enforced patents against major players, including in the medical device industry.   We will ensure that anyone seeking to steal our innovations will pay a heavy price.

Doctors face many disadvantages when trying to develop and provide the best standard of care procedures for their patients.  Our mission is to provide a vehicle for doctors to build and offer the best treatment concepts to ensure that the best patient care is available and reimbursable.
