OpenAI is maintaining its fast-paced growth momentum with a new acquisition to help the company scale ChatGPT. The generative AI innovator announced its acquisition of Statsig, an experimentation platform offering enterprise tools for A/B testing, feature flagging and real-time decisioning.
The move follows OpenAI’s recent capital raise, adding $8.3 billion to its coffers at the start of August. The acquisition also cements Vijaye Raji, Statsig’s founder and CEO, as OpenAI’s new CTO of applications. He will spearhead product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex while overseeing core systems and product lines such as infrastructure and the Integrity team. Raji will report to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, upon assuming his new role.
“Joining OpenAI as CTO of applications is an extraordinary opportunity to bring my experience scaling consumer and enterprise products to a mission I deeply believe in: advancing AI in ways that are capable of solving hard problems, reliable and truly beneficial to people everywhere,” Raji said in a statement. “The journey with Statsig has been deeply gratifying, leading me to this moment and giving me conviction that we will continue helping teams ship better software every day.”
Statsig’s entire team will join OpenAI with this acquisition, though the company will continue its independent operations from its Seattle office. OpenAI already leverages Statsig’s technology to advance its research, helping it quickly ship applications and gain knowledge. Bringing the platform in-house will help OpenAI accelerate experimentation across its applications organization and build more responsive AI experiences for customers.
