Semiconductor builder Nvidia and photonics company Coherent announced a new partnership to support the global buildout of advanced AI data centers. Nvidia plans to invest $2 billion in Coherent to fuel R&D, expand supply and advance the company’s manufacturing capabilities as it grows domestically.

The nonexclusive agreement includes a multi-billion-dollar purchase commitment for Nvidia, alongside the chipmaker’s future access and capacity rights for Coherent’s laser and optical networking products. The combination of the two companies’ technologies is expected to enable high-bandwidth, energy-efficient connectivity across AI factories.

“This strategic relationship underscores Coherent’s role as a key enabler of next-generation AI data center infrastructure,” Jim Anderson, Coherent’s CEO, said in a statement. “We are proud to expand our 20-year relationship with Nvidia by increasing their access to include multiple product families to help them build the AI data centers of the future.”
