System1, a corporation that owns various internet utilities and an AI-powered marketing platform, announced that its MapQuest offering has topped the charts in mobile app stores. MapQuest is a digital navigation solution that was ranked the No. 1 overall free app in the Apple App Store in the United States and Canada.

MapQuest provides services including online mapping and turn-by-turn directions. Launched in 1996, it has worked to deliver maps, routing and local discovery through MapQuest.com and the MapQuest mobile app. The platform is now part of System1, which also owns CouponFollow and Startpage.com.

MapQuest achieved the No. 1 navigation app ranking and the No. 8 and No. 2 overall free app positions in the U.S. and Canada Apple App Stores respectively on August 31, with its climb to No. 1 free app in both markets announced September 1. The company attributes its surge in popularity to its decision to retain familiar historical names for lakes and gulfs on its maps, as it has recently recorded increased usage of 50 times its normal rate.
