Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company, has announced plans to open a new research and development center in Yokohama, Japan, just south of Tokyo.

First announced in May 2025, the center will be located near Ericsson’s existing facilities in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai 21 district. It will focus on the development of radio hardware and software and on open network architectures such as O-RAN to serve clients regionally and globally.

Jan Fallgren has been appointed to lead the new R&D team and strengthen regional expertise within the company’s global network.

Officially expected to begin operations in April 2026, Ericsson said the center is actively recruiting, with a focus on local university graduates and professionals skilled in telecommunications, software and hardware. The company plans to create up to 300 new positions over the next few years.

“I anticipate that the advancement of cutting-edge wireless communication technologies, including 6G, at the new R&D center will foster new innovations, cultivate the next generation of talent and revitalize Yokohama’s economy,” Mayor of Yokohama Takeharu Yamanaka said in a statement.
