Equinix, a Mumbai-based critical infrastructure company, announced its new partnership with CleanMax, a renewable energy provider based in Bengaluru. Having signed a power purchase agreement, or PPA, the partnership stipulates the companies will collaborate on building a 33-megawatt captive power plant in Maharashtra.

Equinix’s captive power projects have solar and wind power capacity and are set to become operational in 2025. Once live, the Maharashtra project will grant renewable energy coverage for Equinix’s International Business Exchange data centers in Mumbai. Equinix’s goal is to maximize its usage of renewable energy to meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure as AI adoption increases in the city.

“We are thrilled to partner with CleanMax to establish this Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra, India,” Manoj Paul, managing director at Equinix for India, said in a statement. “This PPA not only strengthens our commitment to sustainability but also enables us to provide our customers in India with 100 percent renewable energy coverage for their deployments at Equinix.”

The partnership with CleanMax follows Equinix’s signing of  PPAs in Australia and Singapore earlier in 2024. With its latest agreement, the company has executed 23 PPAs across the globe with the expectation of contributing over 3 million megawatt hours of renewable energy each year once operational.
