What the giant of the teeny-tiny is up to now

(Crain's) — Life can present focusing moments for young people in search of direction, but for Chad Mirkin, a stint during college shadowing doctors at a local hospital told him what he didn't want to do with his life. “I watched a surgery, and while I thought it was interesting, much of it repulsed me,” he says. “I knew immediately that I needed to look at other career options.”

Mr. Mirkin instead chose to pursue a life as a scientist, and went to Penn State University, where he earned a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1989. Since then, Mr. Mirkin has become a world-renowned nabob of nanotechnology at Northwestern University and started three companies.
