Some of you might have heard about the fallout between PadMapper and Craigslist, but the saga is far from being over. PadMapper is a web tool that allows, in a beautiful visually way, to search for rental apartments on Craigslist. Essentially it's a great curation tool that makes discovery easier and more effective.
Craigslist ended up suing, even after PadMapper stopped using their listings and working with a third-party company.
Beside the cease-and-desis letters sent out, the "classifieds gorilla" now is adding new provisions to those posting ads:
“Clicking ‘Continue’ confirms that craigslist is the exclusive licensee of this content, with the exclusive right to enforce copyrights against anyone copying, republishing, distributing or preparing derivative works without its consent”
The community and tech publications are rising against these practices and many are wondering if Craigslist should really own our data, and if it's time for disruption in a market where innovation is much needed.
