Canadian Pacific Kansas City, in collaboration with ATCO EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Limited, has completed the construction of two hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton. The facilities are now fully operational.

As part of CPKC’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program, the company is retrofitting several diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells, enabling them to operate without emitting direct emissions.

ATCO EnPower provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the new hydrogen locomotive refueling stations and will continue to oversee their operation. Each facility includes a one-megawatt electrolyzer, compression storage and dispensing systems specifically designed for locomotive refueling. The Calgary facility is partly powered by renewable electricity from CPKC’s existing five-megawatt solar power facility, located at its headquarters.

These new hydrogen refueling facilities will serve as a model for similar projects nationwide, demonstrating CPKC’s commitment to advancing clean and efficient freight transportation. Through its collaboration with ATCO EnPower, CPKC aims to lead the way in sustainable practices within the rail industry.
