Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a new AI venture, Project Prometheus, which he is expected to co-lead and launch with $6.2 billion in funding, much of it from Bezos himself, making it one of the most heavily financed early-stage startups, according to reporting by The New York Times.

While the official launch date for Project Prometheus, which will aim to apply AI to physical tasks across engineering and manufacturing computers, automobiles and spacecraft, has not been confirmed, the company is entering a crowded AI market, though its substantial funding could give it a competitive edge.

This marks the first time Bezos has officially taken a leadership role in a company since stepping down as Amazon CEO in July 2021, the Times reported.

Project Prometheus’ co-founder and co-chief executive is Vik Bajaj, who has served in leadership roles at Google X and Foresite Labs. The startup has already recruited high-level talent from companies such as OpenAI and Meta.
