Ampere Computing to Be Acquired by SoftBank in $6.5B Deal

The acquisition will enhance SoftBank’s AI infrastructure capabilities and fuel its growth initiatives.

Ampere Computing, a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Santa Clara, will be acquired by SoftBank Group in a transaction worth $6.5 billion. Ampere works to drive sustainable computing the cloud, AI inferencing and edge applications. The company will retain its name and operate as a subsidiary under SoftBank following the acquisition.

With nine global locations, Ampere operates a line of cloud-native processors, aiming to provide customers with efficient solutions for various computing needs, such as power and space-constrained embedded devices, edge computing installations and hyperscale data centers. Its acquisition allows SoftBank to enhance its AI infrastructure capabilities and accelerate various growth initiatives.

“With a shared vision for advancing AI, we are excited to join SoftBank Group and partner with its portfolio of leading technology companies,” Renee James, Ampere’s founder and CEO said in a statement. “This is a fantastic outcome for our team, and we are excited to drive forward our AmpereOne roadmap for high-performance arm processors and AI.”
