AI is becoming part of the job search well before a candidate hits “Apply.” In a 2025 survey of 1,645 U.S. workers, iHire found that 40.7 percent of job seekers had used AI, including to research potential employers. Built In has also found that roughly 37 percent of job seekers use AI platforms to discover and research companies. Instead of starting with a career site or company page, some candidates are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI tools questions like: What are the best companies for software engineers? What’s it like to work at this company? Does it promote from within? How does its culture compare with a competitor’s?
That raises a bigger question: How much influence does AI actually have over where you want to work? Built In wants to hear about how you use AI to discover companies, evaluate employers and make career decisions. Has AI ever persuaded you to apply, walk away or look at a company differently? Take our short survey: How Are You Using AI in Your Job Search?
