Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, with over 3 million paid subscriptions to writers, podcasters, and video-makers on the platform. As our VP Finance, you will build the financial plan that underpins this mission, and finance function that unlocks the company to achieve it.

Substack is driving a fundamental shift in how writers and creators reach their audiences. As VP Finance, you'll be pivotal to our continued growth and success. Your financial expertise will proactively guide and shape strategic decision-making and ensure the resources are in place to make a lasting impact on the internet media landscape. This position will report directly to the CEO.

Substack’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $235,000 - $290,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

The Role

• Lead the financial strategy and planning process. Own the financial model that gives us an accurate financial forecast in terms of our product and operational metrics, and charts a course to long-term success.
• Partner with relevant GTM functions to systematize how we make investment decisions, scale, and track success in our systematic evangelism evangelism initiatives.
• Accelerate growth by partnering across the organization to evaluate and execute investments, M&A activities, capital raises, and initiatives that amplify Substack's impact.
• Design and implement robust financial reporting systems and processes that will be the foundation for informed, timely decision-making.
• Take ownership of core finance operations (cap table and option pool, revenue operations, accounting & reporting, etc). Begin by working with our external firm, and own the plan for when and how to build out in-house capacity.

You

• 12+ years of finance experience including leadership experience at ambitious startups.
• Proven expert at financial modeling, transforming data into useful knowledge that leads to effective decisions.
• Track record of success with venture capital fundraising and a firm grasp of the investment landscape.
• Gutsy, ambitious, high agency orientation.
• Clear communicator. You can build understanding, partnership, and effective creative tension with other leaders.
• Aligned with Substack’s values, including freedom of the press and giving power back to writers and readers.
