About the team

The Observability Development team builds and maintains solutions to provide our Product and Engineering teams visibility into the health and performance across our Zillow Group ecosystem.

We are passionate about metrics, distributed tracing and logging! Our team is using commercial vendor, open source and in-house developed solutions providing observability through every layer of our technology stack.

About the role

Are you interested in being a technical leader, guiding engineers across Zillow Group on the best ways to monitor applications and building the tooling to support them? Do you like using and contributing to open source projects? We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to help us build a world class observability solution at Zillow Group! This role will be designing and developing highly available and resilient observability solutions which operate at scale and can help with detection and restoration of problems at each layer of the application stack.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to some of the highest-traffic systems at Zillow, scaling to millions of metrics, and billions of logs lines and trace events a minute.
  • Contribute to the long term technology and product vision for observability at Zillow Group.
  • Contribute to open source regularly, both bug fixes and helping drive the larger project vision and roadmap.
  • Obsess about building systems by enabling observability out of the box and continually learning from and improving the developer experience.
  • Gain and share expertise, evangelizing the best ways to use observability systems.

This role has been categorized as a teleworker position. Teleworkers do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any part of Mexico, but preferably in Mexico City, as we would encourage attendance for occasional in-office events.

U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York and Washington the standard base pay range for this role is $156,300.00 - $249,700.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York and Washington and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

You are a leader with an ability to drive a project home single-handed, but know that real change can only happen as a team. You know how to make technology scale; building well tested systems, designing them to be easily operable, and easy for others to contribute back. You believe in community, whether that's participating in open source projects, or joining in on a conversation improving an internal tool or process.

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Ability to learn new technology and contribute to the Open Source Community.
  • Experience in metric and log collection, distributed tracing and visualization.
  • Experience with multiple monitoring tools like Graphite, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana, New Relic, Datadog, and Splunk.
  • Proficiency and expertise in time-series databases, such as Graphite, InfluxDB, M3DB, Thanos, or Cortex
  • Built high traffic web services and high throughput queues solving scaling challenges in layers between the load balancer and the data store.
  • Experience with infrastructure using AWS and Docker/Kubernetes.
  • Experience with multiple programming languages including GoLang, Java, Python, and NodeJS.
  • Understanding of SLIs, SLOs and SLAs.
