Job Summary

As a Senior Model Maker, you'll play a crucial role in transforming engineering concepts into tangible prototypes and models. Your expertise will bridge the gap between design and production, ensuring that high-quality parts and assemblies are created for various purposes, including UL testing, installation training, sales demos, and failure mode analysis. This role is responsible for product development from concept through production, which includes new product, sustaining and resolution of field problems. Leads mechanical product design and/or redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. Leads prototyping, testing, and assembly of samples. Leads various product design/development projects and teams. Collaborates with and influence all cross functional members of the design team. Presents and communicates project status updates to management. Participates in daily management meetings with the cross-functional team. Mentors and develops other engineers. In everything the Lead Design Engineer does, both in projects and daily tasks, LEAN Process methodology is applied to drive impact, streamline, and improve processes.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Prototype Development:

  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD designs, and specifications to create accurate and functional prototypes.
  • Utilize a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and metal, to construct models.
  • Employ 3D printing, sheet metal blanking and forming, welding, milling, and machining techniques to fabricate parts.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct fit, form, and function testing on prototypes to verify their performance.
  • Collaborate with engineers to refine models based on feedback and testing results.
  • Ensure that prototypes meet quality standards and adhere to design specifications.

Shop Tools and Machinery:

  • Proficiently operate a wide range of shop tools, including hand tools, power tools, and large manufacturing machines.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment to ensure accuracy and safety.

Skills and Minimum Experience Required

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Additional technical certifications or vocational training in relevant fields (e.g., machining, welding) are advantageous.

Experience: Typically requires 3-5 years of related experience. Familiarity with model making machinery repair is a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Basic CAD functionality, including but not limited to, ability to open CAD files and take measurements, confirm scale, manipulate drawings, and change file formats for different machine centers.
  • Skilled in using both manual and automated shop tools.

Soft Skills:

  • Attention to detail and precision.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork.

Business Skills:

  • Adherence to schedules and budgets.
  • Basic MS Office skills.
  • Internal software used for processing engineering requests.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium work

Travel Requirements

  • 1-20%
