Job Overview:

Coursera is an engineering-first company. Our teams are responsible for maintaining a scalable and reliable platform, in addition to building interactive products for the worldwide learner community. We are made up of teams ranging from Development Infrastructure, Growth, Learner/Consumer Experience, Content Platform, and SDET Engineering. Every day, Engineering teams collaborate with cross-functional partners, including other engineers, data scientists, and product managers.

The Subscriptions team is at the heart of Coursera’s mission, responsible for driving the majority of the company’s revenue through our flagship offering, Coursera Plus. This multidisciplinary team includes backend and frontend engineers, product managers, designers, and data scientists. We are tasked with expanding Coursera Plus globally, enhancing subscription tiers, managing enrollment across all content, overseeing the financial aid program, optimizing pricing strategies, and running experiments to boost conversion through the enrollment flow.

We are seeking a highly skilled Engineering Manager to lead our Subscriptions team. This role requires a blend of technical acumen, team leadership, and a keen understanding of our customers and business needs. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education by making our learning resources more accessible and valuable to learners worldwide.

Responsibilities:

  • Mentoring: Acting as a role model, aiding in career development conversations, inspiring engineers, providing feedback.
  • Hiring: Building a vision of team skill sets, identifying key growth areas, and being an effective partner in the overall recruiting efforts.
  • Product enablement: In partnership with the product team, acting as a curator of a vision, discussing needs with stakeholders, prioritizing, empowering the team to drive forward key initiatives, running sprint planning meetings, and standups.
  • Platform leadership: balancing effective product feature delivery against managing tech debt and creating a delightful and best in class product platform to accelerate many different initiatives.
  • Mediating: Fostering inclusive spaces that ensures everyone on the team feels empowered, engaged and able to openly share concerns and ideas.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years in an engineering management position and 3+ years as an engineer/developer.
  • Confident leadership (integrity, transparency, inspiration, empowerment)
  • Emotional intelligence (empathy, humility, patience, communication skills)
  • Problem-solving (creativity, technical rigor, intelligence)
  • Excellence in ambiguous and complex situations (clarity of vision, boldness, grit)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with A/B testing, data analysis, and making data-driven decisions.
  • Experience working in a subscription-based or e-commerce company, with a focus on optimizing conversion funnels and revenue streams.
  • Experience working on Growth teams with a focus on optimizing revenue, including expertise in developing and executing strategies for user acquisition, retention, and monetization.
  • Strong technical expertise in both backend and frontend development technologies.
  • Proven ability to be product-savvy, with a deep understanding of user experience and the ability to contribute to product strategy discussions.

    Compensation:

    Coursera offers competitive pay and equitable compensation practices. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The targeted hiring base salary range for this role is between 170,000 and 190,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, including but not limited to: prior work experiences, training/education, transferable skills, business needs, and geographical location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for variable pay, equity, and benefits
