What you'll do

H&R Block is transforming tax preparation through data to ensure that every client we serve gets the best tax outcome possible. The Director, Data Science & Analytics is a high-visibility and critical role in this transformation. They will be responsible for the Enterprise Analytics practice which provides forecasting, data science, and statistical analysis in support of enterprise level initiatives.

Day to day, you'll

  • Serve as the day-to-day leader of the Enterprise Analytics team providing data science support to key business partners and executives in a consulting model
  • Partner with leadership and executives to advance a bold vision for data science at Block, including identifying new opportunities/use cases
  • Recruit, train, develop, and motivate advanced analytics talent
  • Direct and execute the collection, mining, and analysis of large amounts of data
  • Provide selection, oversight, and maintenance of software and other tools used to develop analyses
  • Make positive contributions across the enterprise as we continue advancement of data-driven-decision making to delight clients

  • Experience leading data science groups in a retail, direct to consumer or technology business

What you'll bring to the team

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative field, or equivalent experience and ability
  • Experience creating robust processes to rapidly deliver measurable impact through data to business partners
  • 10+ years of experience (or equivalent) in solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches, including experience developing and delivering machine-learning models that work in production
  • Demonstrated success in leading a team of analytic professionals and building a team culture
  • Demonstrated leadership using statistical analysis and research to drive positive change in a business setting, including working and conceptual knowledge of data structures, algorithms, statistics, machine learning, and programming
  • Familiarity with relational databases, an advanced-level knowledge of SQL, and demonstrated experience working with the following programming languages: Python, R, Java, Tensorflow, Torch, or equivalent languages
  • Experience working with large data sets and tools like MapReduce, Hadoop, and Hive, and working with large data-streaming technologies like Spark, Flint, and Kafka.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the following: Supervised and Unsupervised Learning, Classification Models, Cluster Analysis, Neural Nets and Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Multivariate Statistics, Markov Models
  • Experience with Cloud using Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Desire to remain on the cutting-edge, smartly implementing innovative solutions from Generative AI, blockchain, bots, NLP, data visualization, OCR, graphs, geospatial analytics, etc.

Pay Range Information

The pay range for this position is listed below. Local minimum wage laws apply. This information is posted pursuant to local requirements to provide applicants with information about what they might be eligible to receive. Individual pay decisions will depend on job-related factors such as experience, education, skill, performance, and geographic location where work will be performed.

Successful candidates may be able to participate in one or more incentive compensation or short-term incentive plans, which could generate additional earnings in accordance with the terms of each plan.

Qualifying associates can enroll themselves and/or their eligible dependents in medical and prescription drug coverage; can participate in the H&R Block Retirement Savings Plan (401(k) Plan), the Employee Assistance Program, (virtual) fitness center programs, and the associate discount program; are automatically enrolled in Business Travel Accident Insurance; and receive Associate Tax Prep benefit.
