Your work will change lives. Including your own.

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Data Science / Computational Biology Intern, you will have access to over 50 petabytes of proprietary biological, chemistry, and patient-connected datasets, matched with access to resources and independence to delve into problems and computational projects related to drug discovery. As such, you will play a critical role on a fast-paced research and development team dedicated to generating and de-risking ideas that add fundamental new capabilities to Recursion’s tech-enabled drug discovery platform. On this team, you will:

  • Answer key scientific questions by analyzing the large and novel biological datasets generated as we onboard new experimental techniques and technologies
  • Develop new statistical and computational approaches to understand, de-risk, and drive decisions about these new technologies and problem statements
  • Design critical experiments to make go/no-go decisions on R&D projects to assess project approaches, feasibility, and potential impact
  • Partner closely with your mentor and an interdisciplinary team of scientists and technologists to build tools and techniques that will drive the entire company forward
  • Communicate with a diverse range of collaborators
  • Learn new ways to code, answer quantitative questions, and think about challenging science as needed

Our Intern program lasts 3 months and can start any time, depending on your availability.

The Team You’ll Join

You will be joining Inception Labs, a research and development group within Recursion. This team is a cross-functional group of exceptional biologists, engineers, product managers, machine learning scientists, computational biologists, and data scientists. Together, we are working to prove out novel technologies including new biological assays and data modalities, statistical and ML techniques, and computational approaches for multimodal and real-world data. This team works rapidly on a project-by-project basis to either prove or disprove the value and feasibility of these new ideas and approaches.

The Experience You’ll Need

  • Passion for the company mission and comfort with answering open-ended questions
  • Ability to brainstorm and communicate with cross-functional teams
  • Strong foundation of statistics, probability, and bioinformatics
  • Strong programming experience, preferably in Python
  • Experience working with large, high-dimensional datasets (preferred)
  • Knowledge of cancer biology (preferred)
  • Experience working with patient derived molecular data or electronic health record data  (preferred)
  • Projected graduation from a PhD level degree program takes place after the completion of your internship

How You Will Be Supported

  • 3 months of full-time, paid internship
  • Direct access to an assigned intern mentor and ongoing mentoring and training from our Data Science / Computational Biology team
  • Receive real-time feedback from peers on analysis results, scientific methodology, and code quality and best practices
  • Ability to learn from and participate regularly in scientific brainstorming sessions and discussions with the entire Inception Labs team
  • Paid housing in Salt Lake City for candidates that would require relocation for the term of their internship
  • Free chef prepared meals at Headquarters every day of the week
  • (For summer interns) intern cohort benefits such as:
    • Lunch Around Recursion: a program that introduces interns to functional groups outside the Technology Organization
    • Planned social activities
    • An end-of-internship poster presentation open to the entire company

Location

This position is based at either our headquarters in Salt Lake City (preferred) or our site in Toronto.

The Values That We Hope You Share:

  • We Care: We care about our drug candidates, our Recursionauts, their families, each other, our communities, the patients we aim to serve and their loved ones. We also care about our work.
  • We Learn: Learning from the diverse perspectives of our fellow Recursionauts, and from failure, is an essential part of how we make progress.
  • We Deliver: We are unapologetic that our expectations for delivery are extraordinarily high. There is urgency to our existence: we sprint at maximum engagement, making time and space to recover.
  • Act Boldly with Integrity: No company changes the world or reinvents an industry without being bold. It must be balanced; not by timidity, but by doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
  • We are One Recursion: We operate with a 'company first, team second' mentality. Our success comes from working as one interdisciplinary team.

Recursion spends time and energy connecting every aspect of work to these values. They aren’t static, but regularly discussed and questioned because we make decisions rooted in those values in our day-to-day work. You can read more about our values and how we live them every day here.
