Position Details:
We are looking for individuals who can solve challenging business problems through technology, engineering and leadership. We are looking for a leader who is willing to be different, to be steps ahead of our competitors and to meet our customer's needs. You will report to the Senior Director, Head of Architecture.
You will be a Lead Architect (Principal Technical Architect) for the Grainger Subsidiaries and Geographies (outside of U.S.). You have systems-thinking perspective, optimizing interaction patterns between capabilities within their specific domain and across domains with other Architects. Principal Technical Architects frequently have technical breadth in their respective domains and are involved in technology strategy, migration, integration, and evolution of their accountable capability as enablers for the delivery teams. Principal Technical Architects look across business, data, applications, and technology to support delivery teams while providing expertise and perspective on modern IT software delivery practices. They also act as champions and co-creators with other Engineering Directors and Tech Leads to bring new ideas, new technologies, and new design patterns to any governing bodies for Enterprise-wide adoption and distribution. There may be opportunities to co-develop some features with technical leads or other senior engineering roles, but you will have more than just development responsibilities.
You will be reporting to the Sr. Director Technical Architecture Leader. This can be a hybrid/remote role based in our Chicago office.
This position is salaried and will pay $163,200 to $250,920. Total compensation will include annual bonus and long-term incentive. Target total compensation will be in the range of $280,000 - $400,000.
The range provided is a guideline and not a guarantee of compensation. Other factors that are involved in offer decisions include, and are not limited to: a candidate's experience, qualifications, geographical area, and internal equity of the team.
You Will:

  • Lead architecture deliverables for Grainger Subsidiaries and Geographies (outside of U.S.).
  • Help teams' architect and engineer solutions across multiple technologies and platforms.
  • Mentor Grainger Technical leads, Senior engineers, Product leaders, Engineering Managers
  • Participated in recruiting activities for senior technical talent.
  • Steer architecture decisions within the design and architecture review process.
  • Influence the GTG executive lead team to pursue technology strategies and architecture specific to Grainger Subsidiaries and Geographies (outside of U.S.).
  • Research current and emerging technologies and proposing changes where needed.
  • Lead the implementation of architectural standards, capabilities, and governance for Grainger Subsidiaries and Geographies.
  • Define capability and systems roadmap and key architectural tradeoffs across Grainger Subsidiaries and Geographies.
  • Inform multiple stakeholders about any problems with the current technical solutions being implemented.
  • Define the Conceptual, logical, and transitional architectures.


You Have:

  • At least 12 years of industry experience in software engineering and architecture.
  • Experience with engineering patterns and multiple implementations (on-prem and cloud) technical expertise.
  • Bring a systems-thinking perspective, choosing the appropriate integration patterns between capabilities within their specific domain.
  • Experience in Event-driven, Cloud-native architectures, Data and Analytics Architectures (including Lakehouse), and API design.
  • Bachelor's degree in business (or Management), Computer Science, Engineering, related disciplines, or equivalent work experience
