This is a 12-month internship opportunity located in Verisk Manchester office starting in June 2027
Step Up from Academic Study
A 12-month industrial placement for students between their second and final years of a computer science (or related) degree. The role focuses on learning the Ignite platform, contributing to team delivery, and building technical foundations under close guidance.
The skills below describe what we expect an intern to be able to do by around the 6-month point of the placement, rather than being what’s required to apply.
Your code will be used by real users, reviewed by colleagues and maintained after you write it. Unlike a university assignment, the work is part of a team's ongoing delivery.
- You are expected to own your tasks, communicate blockers proactively, and behave as a reliable member of the team.
You will not always have the answers. Ask questions when something is unclear, and use the guidance you receive.
We will look at how reliably you complete agreed tasks, how your skills develop, and how you respond to feedback and work with others.
The Intern Program is not eligible for work visa sponsorship. If you will require work visa sponsorship after completing your degree, you do not meet the basic requirements of the Yea-Long intern role.
Responsibilities- Deliver small, well-defined tickets with support, flagging blockers early and asking for help when stuck
- Write working, readable TypeScript and/ or C# .NET code, following established team patterns and coding standards with guidance
- Write unit tests for your own changes, with guidance on what to cover
- Participate constructively in code reviews, implementing or responding to feedback from peers
- Follow established Git workflows: feature branches, clear commit messages, focused PRs
- Be aware of secure coding basics (no hardcoded credentials, input validation, etc.) and apply them, including when raised in code review
- Understand and work within existing SQL Server/PostgreSQL database schemas without making structural changes, and write straightforward queries against them
- Be aware of how the platform is hosted and deployed on Azure and Kubernetes
- Build an understanding of the insurance policy lifecycle (quote, take up, cancellation, renewal) over the course of the placement
- Contribute to legacy code maintenance through small, supervised fixes while building familiarity with system architecture and business logic
- Set up and work effectively in the local development environment, and become familiar with the Ignite codebase
- Attend and contribute to sprint ceremonies, communicating progress and blockers clearly
- Follow documented development processes and escalate when unclear
- Actively seek feedback and act on it consistently, including through regular check-ins with your mentor and Tech Lead
- Present or demo a piece of completed work to the team
Tech Stack
You do not need experience of our specific stack; you will learn it on the job. You should already be able to program in at least one language, understand object-oriented programming, and have basic SQL and Git knowledge.
- Languages: TypeScript, C# .NET
- Frontend: Vue, Nuxt
- Databases: SQL Server, PostgreSQL
- Cloud & Infra: Azure, Kubernetes
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions
- Tooling: Linear, Git/GitHub, Copilot, Notion, Claude
Stretch Skills
Further development, not entry requirements
- Begin taking ownership of small tickets end-to-end without close supervision
- Contribute meaningfully to code reviews rather than just receiving feedback
- Understand how the database schema supports a feature, and begin writing more involved SQL queries
- Deepen understanding of the Customer Portal and/or Ignite platform architecture
AI Literacy
At this level, interns are expected to use AI-assisted development responsibly, with a working awareness of the wider AI tooling landscape:
- Use AI coding assistants (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude) day-to-day for code completion and boilerplate reduction
- Understand, and be able to explain, any code you submit, including AI generated code
- Be aware of what a coding harness is — a structured prompt or scaffolding that guides an AI to produce consistent, testable code
- Be aware of what AI agents are and how they differ from simple prompt/response interactions
- Be aware of the concept of skills as discrete, reusable AI capabilities
- Be aware of MCP (Model Context Protocol) as a way of giving AI agents access to tools and context
- Not expected to build or configure AI tooling, but curiosity and experimentation are encouraged
